September in Truro ...
The last month of summer, but for many the best ... turning left on Rt 6 or going to the PO is no longer a harrowing experience.
Although we lose almost 3 minutes of sunlight per day, our warm surrounding waters keep our average air temperatures up.
According to past records, we expect average lows of 55°F and highs of 70°F. Great weather for plant growth! We traditionally get a total of 2.8 inches of rain which is about the same as August.
Below are some of the activities and events happening about town this month.

Commission on Disabilities
Isaiah Edwards, a first-grade student at the Truro Central School, and his family need our support! Since Isaiah uses a power wheelchair due to his Muscular Dystrophy, the family is in desperate need of accessible housing and transportation. The Provincetown Fire Department will be at two "Toll Booth" Events on Labor Day Weekend: (first) Saturday, September 5th at 10 a.m. and (second) Sunday, September 6th at 4 p.m. at the Conwell/Bradford and Shank Painter/Bradford intersections, respectively "filling the boot" to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and Isaiah. A meet-and-greet will take place Saturday morning September 5th at 10 a.m. at the Provincetown Fire Station on Shank Painter Rd, where you can say "hi" to Isaiah and his family. Any donations will be welcome. The MDA provides resources, support, and much-needed research toward the mission to fight Muscular Dystrophy! Let's support Isaiah and his family, Provincetown Fire, and the MDA!
Wounded Warrior Bike Training Event
On the morning of September 25th the Wounded Warrior Bike Training Event will be passing through Truro on its route to Macmillan Pier in Provincetown. These veterans will arrive at the Old Air Force Station on Dewline Road at about 8:00 a.m. and begin their ride at 9:15 along Dewline Road to South Highland Road to Highland Road and onto Route 6. Last year we had a small turnout of people and we would like a bigger turnout this year to show these wounded warriors how much Truro appreciates them as they continue their rehabilitation and re-entry into civilian life.
Please come out and cheer on our veterans at any of these points along the route. For more information please contact mburgess@truro-ma.gov

Truro Food Pantry - Is your food expired?
Is your food expired? Don't be so quick to toss it! More than 90% of Americans throw out food prematurely, and 40% of the U.S. food supply is tossed - unused - every year because of food dating, according to a Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) publication. "Use By," "Sell By," and "Best if Used By" indicate freshness and peak flavor guidelines for stores, not, as mistakenly believed, an indication of safety dates for consumers.
The Truro Food Pantry keeps an eye on those "dates" with "Pantry Matrix" guidelines that indicate the time frame in which foods are safe to be consumed. For example, pasta and rice are safe to consume for 2 years past their "code date." Eggs can be consumed for 3 weeks past the "code date." Peanut butter and dried beans have 2 more years, and yogurt is good for an additional 2 weeks. While we keep an eye on those dates, the steady turnover of food at the Pantry seldom leaves an unclaimed item on the shelf for very long; even the more unusual donations such as chuño entero (Peruvian dehydrated freeze-dried potato) or pickled cactus find a welcome kitchen.

No Escape From The Cape If Pilgrim Blows
Futaba, a town of roughly 7,000 in Fukushima prefecture, Japan, was, like Plymouth, thrilled when a nuclear power complex known as Fukushima Daiichi was built. It brought jobs and income to the town. As in Plymouth, a new library was built. The town grew and prospered and the people were happy.   More...
