At the recent Town Meeting, Fire Chief Brian Davis' retirement was acknowledged, thanking him for his many years of service.
A proclamation was made to honor Paul Morris for his outstanding leadership with the Town DPW. April 28th, 2015 is officially named "Paul Morris Day." |
Commission on Disabilities
The Truro Commission on Disabilities is thrilled that funding for more mobi-mats was approved at Town Meeting! You can check them out this summer at Head of the Meadow and Corn Hill Beaches where they will make access to the beach easier for everyone! Also, at Corn Hill you will notice Helen's Mobi-Mat (donated by Marcia Wade) which provides access from the boardwalk to the benches. |
Sustainable CAPE
Sustainable CAPE has been busy creating and producing its Meet the Farmer series. Meet the Farmer promotes the use of local produce by demonstrating simple food preparations using local seasonal vegetables. Participants meet individual local farmers, sample and learn about their produce, and then take some home to try with new recipes. The series also helps spread the word about existing SNAP card incentive programs at the Truro and Orleans Summer Farmers' Markets. SNAP customers can turn a $10.00 SNAP card into $20.00 worth of tokens to spend at either market! Meet the Farmer is taking place in every town from Brewster to Provincetown throughout the Spring. In the future, Sustainable CAPE plans to help other farmers' markets double their SNAP recipients' dollars as well... good for our local food economy and for our community's long-term health! Sustainable CAPE's Meet the Farmer Program is supported financially by the statewide initiative "Massachusetts Grown...and fresher™." |
Truro Food Pantry
Is your food expired? Don't be so quick to toss it! More than 90% of Americans throw out food prematurely, and 40% of the U.S. food supply is tossed - unused - every year because of food dating, according to a Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) publication. "Use By," "Sell By," and "Best if Used By" indicate freshness and peak flavor guidelines for stores, not, as mistakenly believed, an indication of safety dates for consumers. The Truro Food Pantry keeps an eye on those "dates" with "Pantry Matrix" guidelines that indicate the time frame in which foods are safe to be consumed. For example, pasta and rice are safe to consume for 2 years past their "code date." Eggs can be consumed for 3 weeks past the "code date." Peanut butter and dried beans have 2 more years, and yogurt is good for an additional 2 weeks. While we keep an eye on those dates, the steady turnover of food at the Pantry seldom leaves an unclaimed item on the shelf for very long; even the more unusual donations such as chuño entero (Peruvian dehydrated freeze-dried potato) or pickled cactus find a welcome kitchen. |
