March in Truro ...
This month we pick up 78 minutes of additional daylight, enough to bring temperatures up about 5 degrees from February.
The longer day and the sun's higher arc in the sky are enough to generate 10% more power from our solar panels.
According to past records, we are told to expect an average temperature to 36°F, with average lows of 29°F and highs of 44°F. We traditionally get an average total of 3 inches of rain and 8 inches of snow. Let's hope the rain is warm enough to melt the snow!
Below are some of the activities and events happening about town this month.

Sustainable Cape
Sustainable CAPE's annual children's art exhibit has been extended through the month of March! The exhibition, entitled The Layers of Life, is on display at the Truro Public Library now through March 28th. Elementary students from Provincetown, Truro, and Wellfleet have shared their garden experiences through the making of collage garden self-portraits. Coordinating and exhibiting this celebratory work is our gift to our community - thanks to each and every one of you who helps Sustainable CAPE by volunteering, participating in and/or sponsoring our work!
Town Election Ballot Openings
Ten elected office openings will appear on the May 2015 ballot.  Town Clerk Cynthia Slade has provided a summary of the openings in a memo to the Board of Selectmen.  Nomination papers are due March 24th and require 20 registered voter signatures.

Commission on Disabilities
The Truro Commission on Disabilities would like to draw your attention to the current fundraising efforts of the Truro Police K9 Association. This organization is spearheading an effort to raise $50,000 to fund a specially-equipped vehicle and the training and the equipment for a K-9 Unit here in Truro.
Since Beau, the Wellfleet Police Department's bloodhound, retired several years ago and subsequently died in 2011, there has been no K-9 Unit on the Lower Cape. Officer Steve Raneo, who has been with the Truro Police Dept. for almost three years, has procured a puppy suitable for police training. He is confident that Ella, a six-month-old Yellow Labrador Retriever, will be perfect for the job.
You might be familiar with the use of K-9 units to aid in drug detection. Police dogs are very helpful in search and rescue cases and helping to find lost or missing people, also. Since adults and children with disabilities (including children on the autism spectrum and older people with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia) are most often lost or missing, the Commission on Disabilities agrees that a K-9 Unit is a good idea for Truro.
Tax-deductible donations can be made to: Truro Police K-9 Association. P.O. Box 808. Truro, Massachusetts 02666-0808

Truro Food Pantry
The Truro Food Pantry, housed in the Community Center kitchen, provides the comfort and support of "neighbors helping neighbors" in times of need. Staffed by volunteers and funded by donations and available to people when work gets slow, a layoff hits, unexpected bills tip the balance, or health issues descend, a full bag of groceries is welcomed gratefully and appreciated enormously.
Pilgrim Nuclear Shutdown Again
The recent winter storm "Neptune" saw the aging Pilgrim Nuclear plant shut down again temporarily, this time as a precautionary measure to insure safety.
An article in the Provincetown Banner by Peter Brown goes into more detail and highlights the danger signs and unanswered questions and concerns.
