December in Truro ...
     This month days will shorten slowly by 13 minutes until we reach the winter solstice on December 21st, the shortest daylight day of the year.
     Shorter days will drop the average high temperature to 41°F, with average lows of 28°F. We get about 7 days of rain or snow with an average total of 4 inches of rain and 7 inches of snow. Expect 2 out of 3 nights to dip below freezing.

Police Department Budget Q&A
On Saturday the 13th of December Chief Kyle Takakjian will be hosting a "Coffee with the Chief" at 9 a.m. at the Police Station to discuss budgets and whatever else is on people's minds.
Truro Cultural Council
The Truro Cultural Council will be meeting in early December to discuss and review as a group all the applications for project funding received this past October. Decisions will be made at the meeting, although they cannot be announced publicly until January 2015. The Truro Cultural Council received applications from individuals, both incorporated and unincorporated nonprofit associations, and from one municipal agency.
   Once the projects are announced, the TCC hopes residents and visitors alike will take part in these programs meant to enhance the local public cultural experience for all in the Arts, Humanities, and Interpretive Sciences.
Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill
The Truro Center for the Arts is asking all local artists, including adults and children who are creative to make a holiday ornament that will be sold during the Holiday Soup Party on 12-13-14 at Castle Hill. All proceeds will benefit the capital campaign for acquiring Edgewood Farm in 2015. More...

In addition to voting for candidates for office, Truro voters were asked to vote on 6 referendum questions.  Below are how about 1,100 Truro voters cast their ballots.

Question #1 - Repeal Gas Tax Indexing
40.8% voted to eliminate indexing.  Statewide this was passed and the law will be repealed.

59.2% voted to increase the state tax annually based on inflation
Question #2 - Expand the Bottle Bill
38.0% voted to expand the bottle bill

62.0% voted for no change.  Statewide this was the majority and the law will remain as is. 

Question #3 - Disallow Gaming Casinos
50.5% YES, prohibit casinos, slots and dog races

49.5% NO, make no change to current laws. 
Statewide this was the majority and the law will remain as is.

Question #4 - Earned Sick Time for Employees
61.1% YES, entitle employees to earn sick time. Statewide this was the majority and workers will get guaranteed sick time.

38.9% NO, make no change to the laws
Question #5 - Pilgrim Nuclear Emergency Planning
Truro voters overwhelmingly voted in favor of including the Cape in the Emergency Planning Zone around Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station.  Currently there is no emergency plan other than to stay home while the bridges are closed.
82.3% of Truro voters said they want a real plan.
  74% of all Cape and Islands voters agree with us.  Best estimates put over 125,000 residents of the Cape and Islands interested in being included in the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone.
Question #6 - Regulate and Tax Marijuana
"...allow the state to regulate and tax marijuana in the same manner as alcohol?"

Truro voted:
   75.7% YES   
   24.3% NO 

In the 8 districts this question was asked, YES votes ranged from 69% to 74%.

Ella is an 1-year-old Labrador Retriever puppy, with high ambitions.  She is hoping to join the Truro Police Department as a drug sniffer and search/rescue K-9.  She's in training, working hard, and showing huge potential, according to her owner/handler Truro Police Officer Steve Raneo.    More on Facebook...
Truro Taxation Aid Fund
This fund was established to provide property taxation assistance to elderly and disabled full time resident homeowners of Truro. The initiative is funded by voluntary contributions from Truro property owners. The fund was authorized by vote at Annual Town Meeting, April 1999, Article 13 (acceptance of Massachusetts General law Chapter 60, Section 3D).
    The fund requires that the applicant meet certain requirements to be eligible. They must be elderly, at least 65 or older as of July 1, 2014 or disabled, not able to work due to illness or accident and is currently receiving benefits from one of the following; Social Security Administration, SSI or Medicaid, Veterans Administration, or Workers Compensation. Total yearly income including Social Security must be less than $35,000, if single or less than $45,000 if married. Applications are available at Truro Town hall, Truro Library and the Truro COA as well as on the Truro web-site, (www.truro-ma.gov). All information supplied to the committee will be held in the strictest confidence and not be open to the public. Applications are due by December 30th, 2014. For further information please contact the office of the treasurer at Truro Town Hall.
