August in Truro ...
August -- starts with summer, ends with a hint of fall. Although we lose an hour of sunlight, our warm surrounding waters keep our average air temperatures almost up to July's.
According to past records, we expect an average temperature of 69°F, with average lows of 61°F and highs of 77°F. We traditionally get a total of only 2.8 inches of rain (a bit more than July).
Below are some of the activities and events happening about town this month.

New Town Administrator Survey
The Truro Board of Selectmen has established a Town Administrator Search Committee to help in recruiting and hiring a new Town Administrator. The brief survey (please click here) asks for the skills and traits that you would like to see in our new Town Administrator. It should take only a few minutes to fill this out, and the information that you provide anonymously will be very valuable in helping to determine the type of person who will be the best match for this important position. Thank you!
Truro Treasures Weekend
We need volunteers for Truro Treasures Weekend, which is September 19th, 20th, and 21st, with the theme of Truro's Special Places. There are many areas that need help, such as:
  • One-hour supervision shifts of the "Moonbounce" and "Shark Slide" for the children on Saturday.
  • Working at the school, selling T-shirts and raffle tickets on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Helping with the art auction on Saturday.
  • Before the Truro Treasures Weekend event, we need assistance in distributing brochures to businesses, etc.
If interested, please contact our website www.trurotreasures.org.
Truro Cultural Council
Many of the varied projects funded in full or in part by the Truro Cultural Council are complete or are in progress now. There was a Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill Regional Juried Art Exhibit. There is support for The Cultural Center of Cape Cod's Rise and Shine Program for at-risk youth, and for the horticultural leadership of the Children's Community Garden. Additionally, a musical review was enjoyed from Cape Cod Repertory Theater's Bluestone Group, performed at the Council on Aging.
In other news, plans are in the works to conduct future Cultural Council Grants through a paperless on-line system. This should be in place for the 2016 Grant Cycle. In the meantime, 2015 Grant Applications, which are due by October 15, 2014, still must be submitted on paper. Please note that the Truro Cultural Council requires seven (7) copies of your application. One copy of supporting materials, letters of recommendation, etc., is sufficient; but seven copies of the application itself are required.
Commission on Disabilities
On Friday, July 25th local author Yvonne deSousa gave a reading from her book, MS MADNESS! A "Giggle More, Cry Less" Story of Multiple Sclerosis at the COA. She kept the audience laughing as she described her entry into the world of chronic illness. As Richard M. Cohen, NY Times best-selling author of Blindsided and Strong at the Broken Places (and fellow MS sufferer) commented, "Laughter has carried me a greater distance than conventional medicine ever will. In the end, attitude drives well being." Yvonne's book makes us realize that with a sense of humor, we can survive anything. She is a delight in person!
