Sirius Technical Services recently sponsored the World Robotics Competition in Anaheim, CA. where over 700 teams competed from 26 different countries. Each team of young engineering students built a machine that was both autonomous and operated by a controller, and designed to do various tasks on an obstacle course. The "robot" competes against other robots built to the same specs, and is judged on the young engineers' abilities in programming, problem solving, and mechanical aptitude.

Employee of the Quarter!
Bryan Langham
Bryan Langham pictured above with Sirius service representative, Kristin Sanborn.
Sirius is pleased to honor one of our favorite "L&L" employees (long and loyal!), with our Employee of the Quarter award presented to Bryan Langham, of Spanish Fort, AL. Bryan has been a long time employee with Sirius, having been on-board with us from the early days in January of 2008.
"Bryan has been a valuable structural designer and checker in our industry," said Susie Bush, COO of Sirius, "and I am always extra thankful for our employees who have been loyal to us over the years. Bryan is not only a great talent, he's a great person too!"
Bryan has been in the design industry since 1998, and when not at work he is a full time dad to his two sons, Connor (6) and Garrison (9). When time remains after the boys and work, Bryan really likes to be outdoors, enjoying the beach and kayaking. Thanks for your relationship with us Bryan and for all your hard work!
We appreciate and congratulate you!

IRS Audits Focusing On Staffing Agency Per Diem
|

The IRS is looking at making sure employees' "tax homes" are correctly identified by their employer. In other words, the employer must ensure the employee is working away from his true "tax home" before paying any per diem. The IRS is often challenging the sufficiency of employers' documentation processes-for example, seeking current leases, mortgage statements, utility bills, etc.-to make sure an employee actually has a tax home away from where he's working. Also, any "temporary" employees working in one location for longer than twelve months pose additional problems as they are no longer eligible to receive per diem while continuing to work in that location.
This issue has understandably been on the staffing industry's radar lately given the potential for substantial liability if done incorrectly and caught on audit. The IRS is being very proactive about targeting the staffing industry regarding these practices, so ensuring compliance now will minimize liability.
