Zika Virus Guidance
Due to the recent public health emergency regarding Zika virus and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine's recently issued Guidance for Providers Caring for Women and Men of Reproductive Age with Possible Zika Virus Exposure, ReproTech is requesting clearer documentation of the potentially infectious status of specimens being transferred to our storage centers. We are updating our Specimen Transfer Data form to include new questions which communicate the risk associated with Zika virus, West Nile virus, Ebola virus as well as other relevant communicable disease agents. Our patient Registration forms and Transfer From ReproTech forms are also in the process of being updated.

ReproTech encourages clinics to develop internal policies for the screening of  patients and donors for possible infectious disease risk. ReproTech will segregate and store per our Potentially Infectious program when clients indicate that they have lived or traveled to areas of active disease transmission for Zika Virus, Ebola or other disease within 12 months of collection of specimens or creation of embryos. The CDC has identified geographic areas of
travel risk, a page specifically for Zika, and information regarding travel and/or residence in Mexico.

Specimens from individuals who are deemed at-risk for possible Zika Virus infections as per the CDC, will be segregated and stored per our Potentially Infectious program. However we will access PI fees only to those specimens from individuals who have had a diagnosis of Zika Virus infection either by a medical doctor or through a diagnostic or screening test.

From time to time we can expect outbreaks of other diseases throughout the world. Some of these will potentially impact the treatment of IVF patients, such as the Ebola outbreak in 2014. While the U.S. recorded a minimal number of Ebola cases in 2014 and 2015, the fact remains that there is a risk of transmission through semen, and therefore proper screening of specimens determined to be at risk is important. While the FDA has not issued guidance on Ebola Virus as it pertains to donor tissue, the AATB has revised its standards to address Ebola Virus transmission. ReproTech will be following those standards.

The FDA has issued new Guidance for Industry to reduce Zika Virus transmission risk in Donor Screening. The guidance for immediate implementation can be found here.

New information is being released frequently therefore the CDC has provided a specific page on Zika here.

Also a FREE training module on Zika is available through ASRM.
