Collaborative Solutions
Strengthen Ann Arbor's Social Sector

Grantmakers in Washtenaw County, Michigan -- including private and community foundations, nonprofits, and local government -- recently collaborated to better support the region's human service sector. Combining nearly $10 million over a two-year period, the funders worked closely with grantees to establish common goals, prevent funding gaps, and avoid redundancies in service.

TCC Group Senior Consultant Kate Locke has evaluated a number of collaborations and found that "effective partnerships among community organizations, local philanthropies, and government require hard work and an investment of time and trust. The Washtenaw County grantmakers modeled the strong relationships that they encouraged among their grantees. By working together, the funders had greater impact on the region's most pressing needs than they would have had acting independently."

TCC Group's evaluation of the initiative identified several community assets and early successes that aided the implementation of this innovative funding model. The coordinated funders are pleased to share these learnings, which could benefit other communities. Read the executive summary and the full evaluation report.

Engaged Leaders: Alignment with Vision & Values

In a recent blog post for CSRwire, Partner Tom Knowlton and Associate Director of Corporate Services Nadia Gomes examine the invaluable role leaders play within their companies. Leaders at companies with reputations for strong corporate citizenship recognize citizenship as integral to a company's very identity, values, and way of conducting business. Employees and stakeholders can tell when leaders are sincerely committed to corporate citizenship -- when it is part of the culture and when leaders "walk the talk." Tom and Nadia draw examples from TCC Group's recent projects with Wells Fargo, where leaders have worked to build a culture of community involvement. Read more.
Working Together to Advance Place-Based Strategies
Chris Cardona

Engagement among private business, grantmakers, nonprofits, and community residents fosters new opportunities for partnership and growth. In a recent blog for the Council on Foundations, Director of Philanthropy Chris Cardona discusses how foundations and businesses can be creative partners in local economic development. He highlights how San Diego's "urban villages" put this idea into practice.
