Unlocking the Mystery of
Volunteer Retention

girl scouts Like many nonprofits that depend on volunteers to fulfill their mission,  GPeiYao Chenirl Scouts of Northern California faces an increasing challenge. As the number of girls involved in the program grows, so does the need to hold on to volunteers. Girl Scout leaders recognized that a combination of circumstances made it difficult to keep volunteers coming back, so they partnered with TCC to conduct a study using both predictive analytics and focus groups to identify keys to volunteer retention. TCC's Associate Director of Evaluation PeiYao Chen answers the question, "What Makes Volunteers Stay?" in a recent blog for Stanford Social Innovation Review.

Advice for Successful
International Site Visits

In a recent blog series for Philanthrofiles, TCC Consultant Rachel Humphrey shares the key ingredients to conduct effective international site visits. Rachel recommends that grantmakers "forgo the usual 'dog and pony show,' and instead find ways to have unscripted and authentic conversations with staff and beneficiaries." To make the most out of a site visit, it is important to know your purpose and communicate it clearly. What will the site visit do for you? And how will it serve your grantees? Read more.

Program Strategy

Is your grantmaking achieving its mission?

Strong, strategic grant programs reflect a foundation's values, balance internal capacities with the external environment, and address constituents' needs.  But, it takes rigorous planning to create programs with impact.

Data play an important role in the process, but as Associate Director of Philanthropy Chris Cardona notes, "many people are afraid of the numbers. Data can be daunting. Framing your data collection around concrete questions makes it more manageable. But, you have to ask the right questions in order to collect meaningful information. For instance, 'How effective are our grantmaking practices in building nonprofit capacity?' is a better question than, 'What do grantees think of our grantmaking?' And remember that the data work for you and not the other way around."

Successful CSR:
Strong Programs Aren't Enough

Tom (white background) TCC Group Partner Tom Knowlton and Senior Consultant Nadia Gomes have launched a new, five-part blog series on CSRwire that explores the critical elements of effective corporate citizenship. In their first blog, Nadia Gomes Tom and Nadia discuss why strong programs don't always lead to successful corporate citizenship. "When asked to develop a citizenship strategy and programs," says Tom, "the first inquiry is often about creating a 'signature program' that will deliver shared value for the community and the company. However, building a signature program should be a secondary priority; it is much more important to address other elements, such as leadership and culture, to form an effective platform on which the programs stand." Read the blog series and learn about the framework.
