GEO

TCC Group recently collaborated with Ashoka, Social Impact Exchange, and Taproot Foundation on research commissioned by Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO). Pathways to Grow Impact, GEO's latest report, shares these important findings. The study focuses on the strategies used by high-performing nonprofits to achieve better results and the types of support that strengthen these efforts. GEO's report provides a useful framework for understanding different approaches to scaling impact, stories from successful nonprofit leaders, and practical recommendations for funders seeking more effective ways to achieve better results. Strengthening a Nonprofit Cohort's Evaluation Capacity

Cohort consulting is a cost-effective way to bring together groups of nonprofits for a collective learning process that results in new skills, useful tools, and innovative systems. TCC recently completed an initiative with Youth I.N.C., an organization that "empowers, develops, and educates nonprofits serving young people." Working closely with five of Youth I.N.C.'s nonprofit partners, TCC developed customized frameworks to build the cohort's evaluation capacity and develop each organization's ability to measure meaningful metrics. Learn more about outcomes from the initiative.

Capacity-Building Q&A with
Amelia Korangy

What tools, skills, or capacity-building activities have the greatest impact on a cohort of grantees?

In working with several Ameliadifferent cohorts, we've learned that coaching is a critical ingredient in capacity building. Good coaching provides grantees with an chance for honest reflection and a sounding board for ideas. In several recent projects, we've seen how coaching develops and encourages strong leadership - a crucial piece of organizational capacity - helping EDs to tap into their own motivation and that of their staff. Coaching can be the difference between organizations that simply create plans and those that actually implement and learn from them.

How can funders support cohorts?

Connecting grantees across a cohort proves to be one of the most valuable contributions funders can make. There is a lot of knowledge and expertise within each member. By creating a collaborative environment, grantees are able to crowd-source and cross-pollinate ideas, share resources, and learn together. It is exciting to see how organizations in a cohort adapt and strengthen over time.
