Letter from the MBCN President

Shirley Mertz
Greetings!,

Time is a precious commodity for us all and it sure moves quickly. Here we are, already in the final two weeks of December 2013.

I want to provide you with an End of Year Update of the initiatives and projects completed by the Metastatic Breast Cancer Network during 2013. I hope you will conclude that we are using our resources, effort and energy to actively improve the lives of metastatic breast cancer patients across the United States.

Since we do not regularly ask for donations to support our efforts, please consider sending a donation to our organization before the New Year in memory of someone, in honor of someone or a general donation. We will put it to good use in 2014. Thank you.

If you have questions for us, or ideas you want to share, please contact me at s.mertz@mbcn.org.

The Board Members of MBCN and I wish you Happy Holidays and a New Year filled with love and peace!

Shirley Mertz

President

Dealing with the Holidays

Check out our blog on Dealing with the Holidays

The holidays are here. While some songs claim this is the most wonderful and most happiest time of year, for many people it is also the most stressful time of year. Last year, we asked people with MBC to share their thoughts on the holidays. We asked them, among other things, how to deal with the feeling that that this holiday had to be most perfect and most memorable gathering. Their comments were so insightful.

 Sarah's Story: N.E.D. after 4 years

Sarah was too young for metastatic breast cancer, diagnosed at age 28.  But, 4 years later she is still going strong, with no plans to be going anywhere soon.

 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium

MBCN participated in the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) last week. It is one of the largest professional breast cancer meetings of oncologists,  researchers and advocates.

Although December is a busy month, we recommend you register and listen to either of these webcasts which will report on the latest breast cancer research presented at SABCS:

12/18 WED 1:30-3:00  Latest Developments from SABCS with an expert panel, including Dr. Julie Gralow, Dr. Lisa Carey and others
Webcast from Cancer Care

12/19 Thurs noon-1PM Update from SABCS with Dr. William Gradishar
Webcast from LBBC

 Caregivers Magazine

MBCN is proud to have participated in this online magazine, published by the Advancedbreastcancercommunity.org and the Count Us, Know Us,
Join Us Program. Cate Edwards is featured, as well as many of our MBCN members, offering helpful advice and insights on caregiving and support.

Kudos to MBCN President Shirley Mertz as guest editor; Jennie Grimes and her partner Connor on "From a Partner's Perspective"; Marie and Larry Gerberi on "The Strength of Emotional Support "; and many of you whose comments celebrating your own caregiver appear on the back cover.

Update on the MBC Alliance
During SABCS in San Antonio last week, the members of the MBC Alliance had a face to face meeting.
  • The landscape analysis on gaps and unmet needs of mbc patients is progressing and results are expected at the end of the first quarter of 2014
  • MBCN President Shirley Mertz gave the inspiring closing remarks.

Why is it important?
Believe it or not... in the complicated, connected Internet world, the more connections we have, the more our profile is raised and the more our website will show up in Google, Bing or Yahoo searches. Think of the newly diagnosed out there who are searching for info on metastatic breast cancer, and help them get to us sooner!

MBCN is a national, independent, nonprofit, all volunteer, patient-led advocacy organization dedicated to the unique concerns of the women and men living with metastatic breast cancer. We strive to help those living with metastatic breast cancer be their own best advocate through providing education and information on treatments and coping with the disease.
