Proper Pruning of Crape Myrtles

 

Thinking about pruning your crape myrtle, but unsure of the proper way?  Below is an example of the correct way to prune so that the health and well-being is retained.

As shown above, your Crape Myrtle will grow naturally by selectively trimming out cross branching.  There are other various techniques that can be used, depending on the surrounding landscape. 

  

 

Below is an example of how NOT to prune your Crape Myrtle.  This plant will not flower correctly this coming season. It is now susceptible to powdery mildew (fungus) and aphid infestation due to the pruning technique that was done. All of the new branching will grow out at eye level and become an obstruction as you walk along the sidewalk.
