Spring Break

Spring Break is less than two weeks away (March 14-18th)! We know it's tough, but hang in there. Take the time to breathe and regroup for the remainder of the semester. You'll be a little over halfway through!

Also, keep in mind that RSS and most other offices on campus will be closed on the last day of Spring Break, Friday, March 18th.

Midterm Potluck
Swing by our potluck next Wednesday, March 9th, at 5:00pm in the Brooks Gathering Room!

The midway point of the spring semester is quickly approaching and we thought it would be nice to invite students, staff, and faculty alike to come over, relax, and fuel up for the rest of the semester with some good comfort food. Last semester we had a great turnout and a huge array of food. We're aiming to do the same this time around! Everyone is encouraged to bring family, friends, and a dish to share.

We hope you can make it!

Festival of Native Arts
The 43rd Annual Festival of Native Arts, dedicated to the late Evan Charles, is this week! From March 3-5th, join UAF in the celebration of cultures from all across Alaska. This year's theme is "Experience the Heartbeat of the Drum."

This year's event will feature over twenty different dance groups on the main stage at the Davis Concert Hall, fourteen different workshops in the Wood Center, and tons of vendors selling Alaska Native art in the Fine Arts Complex. You can find out what else is happening at https://fna.community.uaf.edu/.

The Festival of Native Arts is free of charge and open to all people, no matter their backgrounds! Be sure to take advantage of this wonderful event.

We're currently still in need of some volunteer cooks for the annual potluck! If you would like to help out with this or with Festival in the future, please contact the Department of Alaska Native Studies and Rural Development at (866) 478-2721 or [email protected].

2016 FNA Potlatch & Pageant

Opportunities for traditional food and community engagement abound this month! On March 19th, you are invited to attend Fairbanks Native Association's 53rd annual potlatch. The event will take place at 5:00pm in the Chief David Salmon Tribal Hall.

This event started out as an opportunity for the native community to gather and share food and company. It has since evolved as an event to celebrate culture and community. Everyone is welcome to attend this event!

Dennis Demmert Award
For 22 years, we've been presenting the Dennis Demmert Award to deserving staff and faculty members who have helped support Alaska Native Education. We need your input to keep it going!

Do you know of an awesome staff or faculty member that you want to have recognized for supporting Alaska Native Students? Get your nomination form in for the Dennis Demmert Award! It's really quick and extremely easy to do. All you need is the person's name, department, and a brief message about why you're nominating them.

Fill out the short form here by April 15th:
http://www.uaf.edu/ruralss/dennis-demmert/

Please understand that because this award is offered through Rural Student Services, the RSS staff cannot be considered as award recipients!

Student Success Workshops

The Academic Advising Center offers a large number of workshops designed to promote study and university skills important to student success. Upcoming topics include, effectively reading a textbook, reducing math anxiety, successful test taking, note taking skills and many more!

Click here for the full list of workshops that are being offered this semester.

VITA Tax Help

Great Alaska Accounting People (GAAP) provides free income tax assistance, preparation, and electronic filing as part of the IRS Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA). If you need help with your taxes, stop by the 319 Bunnell Building on March 5th or 26th between 10:30am and 2:30pm. There will be someone just outside of the Schiable Auditorium ready to assist you.

If you'd like more information, contact GAAP, at (907) 474-7121. You can also visit GAAP's website.

Permanent Fund Dividend
It's March! That means your PFD application needs to be in by the end of the month (March 31st). If you haven't done it yet, get it out of the way and do it now! Don't join the masses who push it off right up until it's too late.

Here's the link to the application: http://www.pfd.state.ak.us/

Tutors

Members of the student club, American Indian Science and Engineering Society, are kind enough to offer their brains in the form of tutoring each semester. They have come up with their first schedule that includes when tutors will be in the Gathering Room and what they can help students with.

We are also lucky enough to have students from the Writing Center stop by and help with English questions. This semester, they will be in the Gathering Room from from 2-4:00pm Monday through Thursday.
