Celebration of Life

On March 13, 2015, we lost our good friend, Evan Charles. Evan was a sophomore at UAF from Emmonak. His bright smile and easy-going nature is sorely missed.

Tonight, April 2nd, there will be a Celebration of Life in his honor. Please join us at 5:30pm in the Wood Center Ballroom to gather and share fond memories of him.

Here is the program:

  • Performance by Iu-Yupiaq Dance Group
  • Evon Peter, Vice Chancellor, College of Rural and Community Development
  • Brian Rogers, Chancellor, University of Alaska Fairbanks
  • Two short films by Evan
  • Sveta Yamin-Pasternak, Anthropology Department
  • Colleen Angaiak, Rural Student Services
  • Cathy Brooks & Adrienne Titus, Festival of Native Arts
  • Maasak Mills, Iu-Yupiaq Dance Group
  • John Nelson, Natives For Positive Change
  • Invitation for others to speak
  • A few words from Evan's family
  • Song by Christina Edwin
  • Final Roll Call

Alaska Native Oratory Competition

The 2015 Alaska Native Oratory Competition will be held on Friday, April 3rd at 5:30pm in the RSS Gathering Room. The event is an opportunity to celebrate Alaska Native oratory traditions by featuring performances in three categories: Storytelling, Declamation, and Poetry/Spoken Word.

Stop by to listen to your peers compete! The event is being sponsored by UAF's student group, Natives for Positive Change, who will be serving chili and fry bread and drawing door prizes so please invite your family and friends to support this wonderful event.

Registration

The fall class list is available for you to see and registration opens up on April 6th (April 13th if you're non-degree seeking)! Classes fill up fast, so schedule an appointment with your advisor soon to go over options for next semester.

The easiest way to set up an appointment is online! Visit www.uaf.edu/ruralss and click on Advising Appointments. From there, you'll click on your advisor's name and follow the prompts! If you're not comfortable using this method, you can always call us at (907) 474-7871 or drop by!

Financial Aid Drawing
When you're not working on your studies, be sure to start applying for financial aid! Not only will it help you next semester, but you could win some awesome prizes from us!

Fill out financial aid applications for the fall semester, let your advisor know, and you'll be entered into our drawing! You'll get one entry per piece so the more you fill out, the higher your chances are of winning! Already filled out some financial aid? Meet up with your advisor and see if it qualifies.

You could win one of two three-credit tuition waivers!

The drawing will be held during our Springfest Barbecue on April 24th!

Dennis Demmert Award Nominations
For 21 years, we've been presenting the Dennis Demmert Award to deserving staff and faculty members who have helped support Alaska Native Education. We need your input to keep it going!

Do you know of an awesome staff or faculty member that you want to have recognized for supporting Alaska Native Students? Get your nomination form in for the Dennis Demmert Award! It's really quick and extremely easy to do. All you need is the person's name, department, and a brief message about why you're nominating them.

Fill out the short form here by April 17th:
http://www.uaf.edu/ruralss/dennis-demmert/

Please understand that because this award is offered through Rural Student Services, the RSS staff cannot be considered as award recipients!

Recipients of this award will be recognized at a reception in the RSS Gathering Room on Thursday, April 30th at 1:00pm

Springfest BBQ
From April 23th to the 25th, UAF will be celebrating Springfest! There will be tons of activities going on around the main campus. Keep your ears open for the awesome things to check out like the Mud Volleyball Tournament, Knocker Ball, the Watermelon Drop, and Lottanobooza!

Also, on the 24th, when you're enjoying that much needed day off from classes, be sure to stop by RSS at noon for our annual barbecue!

RSS Survey
It's that time again! Every year, we ask you about how we're doing. We need your input so we can serve you better! In the past, we've used responses to add services like free coffee and change ones that aren't working out for you.

Be sure to fill out our year-end survey and enter in the drawing for a chance to win some awesome prizes!

You can fill out the survey in person when you stop by our office, or you can simply go to www.uaf.edu/ruralss and click on RSS Survey. It's completely anonymous, takes less than five minutes, and could mean even better services at RSS!

We really appreciate your input!
