Dear CRLS Families:
In wake of the horrible tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, I am writing to inform you of initial plans to support CRLS students and staff in this difficult time.
CRLS School Psychologists, Social Workers and other Learning Community staff will be available to meet and talk with students during the school day for the entire week. An all school staff meeting was held on Monday, December 17, 2012 at 7:30 AM for the CRLS professional community to discuss support systems and ways to process the tragic incident with students. The professional community will reconvene after school on Monday, December 17, 2012 at 2:45 PM to debrief the day and discuss additional supports. If necessary, supplemental programming will be developed to address student needs.
I also want to highlight current measures CRLS takes to keep our community safe. There are two Cambridge Police Department School Resource Officers assigned to CRLS and the High School Extension Program. In addition to the uniformed personnel on campus, there are nine Safety and Security staff members who establish and maintain a safe atmosphere. All exterior doorways are locked during the school day. Visitors to the campus can only enter the school through the main entrance where they are initially greeted by a member of the Safety and Security office. The Cambridge Public School District has recently completed a comprehensive review and revision of school emergency procedures. Each classroom is equipped with an emergency reference flipbook that details staff and student procedures in the event of an emergency. Staff members have received training on these emergency procedures and responses. We have provided lockdown instructions to staff and students. Last Tuesday, December 11, 2012 we conducted our first lockdown drill. I expect that the school will perform at least one additional lockdown drill before the end of the 2012-13 school year. While we do not expect or anticipate a situation that requires a lockdown, as a school community, we need to be prepared for all emergencies.
CRLS has not received any type of threat, nor do we expect one. However in light of recent events in we are doing everything we can do to maintain a safe school environment focused on student learning. Please contact the school at (617) 349-6630 if you have questions or concerns regarding the school's support structures and/or safety procedures.
Sincerely,
Damon Smith Principal

News from Friends of CRLS:
Dear Families and Friends of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School,
Listen to what a class of 2012 "First Scholar," a first-generation FOCRLS scholarship recipient, had to say as she looked toward college this fall:
This fall I will be attending Simmons College to hopefully become a neuroscience major. My ultimate goal is to become a developmental pediatrician to work with children who have autism or ADHD. This award is important to me because I can focus on my college education aware that my financial load has been lightened. I am thankful for your generosity and hope that one day I will be able to support other students' academic endeavors, such as this scholarship has done for me. Thank you to the Friends of CRLS.
She isn't alone; there are many graduates like her at CRLS. With our help, each can not only thrive, but also reach out to other college-bound Rindge students like themselves.
The mission of Friends of CRLS is to make life-changing opportunities available to all of our students. Help us reach that goal with your gift this holiday season. What is more meaningful than a gift that invests in a student?
The goal of the Friends of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (FOCRLS) is to make every opportunity available to all of our students, and to keep expanding those opportunities. Your support can go a long way in reaching this goal.
Donate online at http://www.focrls.org
Please consider a tax-deductible donation of
$100, $250, $500 or any amount.
Or take the challenge of two CRLS families who have each offered
to match donations of $5000!
Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season,
Elaine Schear
President, Friends of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School
