Golf with Us!

Enjoy a day of golf on a challenging 18-hole championship golf course, while supporting Cornerstones' programs, including the Embry Rucker Community Shelter named in honor of Embry Rucker an avid golfer and community advocate for the homeless.

IMPACT SNAPSHOT

The Embry Rucker Community Shelter provided shelter to 10 families (11 adults and 16 children) and 31 single adults (including 6 Veterans). 7 of the 9 families and 6 of the 11 single adults who exited the shelter moved to permanent housing. (March 2015 data)

 

Community Case Supportive services were provided to 6 families and 8 single adults to keep them housed and out of homelessness. 2 families and 6 adults who were previously homeless were placed into permanent housing. (March 2015 data)

 

ASAPP (Assistance Services and Pantry Program) served 711 households (1,592 beneficiaries). 581 households received bags of food and toiletry items, with some households also receiving counseling through the Wellness Support program; 225 households received information, referrals and life skills classes. (February/March 2015 data)

The Foreclosure Prevention program assisted 19 households, of which 5 households (20 beneficiaries) have thus far been able to bring resolution to their case to avoid foreclosure (March/April 2015 data)

Through our multi-lingual Pro Bono Legal Clinic at the Southgate Community Center, the largest such clinic in Fairfax County, 24 people were given free consultation with a lawyer. (March/April 2015 data)

The Community Building Initiative team provided 85 instances of one-on-one support to Reston residents in the Wellness Support and Information and Referral Program, helping people achieve their goals through advocacy, support and encouragement. (March/April 2015 data)

AWARD FOR GIRLTALK

Terrance D. Stroman III (second from left), Cornerstones' Program Coordinator and Advocate at West Glade Community Center, along with partners from the Dept. of Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) and Dept. of Family Services, were presented with the NCS Partner Recognition Award for their work with the West Glade GirlTalk program. GirlTalk brought 18 women of various ages together to learn from and laugh with each other and come to a place of better understanding. This powerful group met over a six week period and had a lasting impact on all who attended. In the words of one participant, "I don't want it to end!" 
MY CHILD'S FUTURE,
MY CHILD'S SUCCESS 

Cornerstones presented "My Child's Future, My Child's Success" at the Herndon Neighborhood Resource Center, helping parents and kids see the importance of staying in school and going on to college or professional certifications, the importance of parents being involved in their children's education/school, and the protective factors that contribute to reducing dangerous behavior.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Child Care: Supervise children while their parents participate in educational workshops and other important activities. Engage with children using resources and materials provided by Cornerstones. Volunteers commit to participating "on call" for varying programs. Who: Individuals or Groups; Adults and youth at least 14 years old When: Tuesdays starting April 28th through September 22nd from 5:30-8:30 pm.
