Middle School Design Challenge Featured on Popular

Education Site

The exciting details of the Middle School Design Challenge that 6th - 8th Grade students

experienced during January's Silva-mester session are featured on a popular education website Edutopia.  The site is published by the George Lucas Educational Foundation (GLEF) and was founded in 1991 by the famous filmmaker and venture capitalist Steve Arnold.  Edutopia features a series titled "Schools That Work" profiling programs in K-12 Grade schools that are improving the ways in which students learn.  The extensive write-up describes the process of how our students were given a series of design challenges in which they identified and pursued solutions to relevant world problems.  One of these problems was homelessness which led to the idea of creating temporary housing using shipping pallets.

5th Grade Students Selected to Perform in Honors Choir

Congratulations to 5th Grade students Caroline Porterfield and Elizabeth Anne McGill (pictured with music teacher Lauren McCall) who were among the 226 students selected to sing for the 2015 South Carolina Elementary Honors Choir. The selection process began in October when Caroline and Elizabeth Anne auditioned against 500 other 4th- 6th Grade singers across the state. Our Shannon representatives sang seven difficult pieces that required months of preparation and hard work. The Honors Choir performed on Saturday, February 7, at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center to an audience of over 1,000!  We are so proud of Caroline and Elizabeth Anne for representing Shannon Forest Christian School in this prestigious event.

BRING IT ON!

March Means Hunger Project PENNY WARS!

The entire school will be competing in a Hunger Project PENNY WARS from Monday, March 2 - Friday, March 6.  On the West Campus (US), it's every grade for themselves and the East Campus (LS) teachers will see who can collect the most in their jars.  The goal is to fill the jar you want to win with ONLY pennies and to sabotage the rest of the jars with other coins and bills.  Pennies are positive points and all other money deposited in a jar is subtracted from the total penny amount.  All proceeds will go toward reaching our goal to raise $10,000 for the Hunger Project.  Please contact Chris Conover at cconover@shannonforest.com if you have any questions and start getting ready NOW!

Box Tops for Education Teacher Contest

The deadline to send in Box Tops for Education for the teacher contest is Monday, February 23.  The teachers from both East and West Campuses are competing to see who can collect the most Box Tops.  The teacher with the most box tops collected in his/her name will win a $50 gift card to the place of their choice.  When clipping the Box Tops, please make sure the expiration date is good through March of 2015 and trim the Box Top completely square.   When turning in your Box Tops, make sure they are bagged and labeled with the teacher's name.

PRO volunteers are needed for Tuesday, February 24, to count and sort Box Tops.  If you are interested in helping, please contact Laura Boehm, at lboehm@shannonforest.com.
