Jack Cummings Elected as YIG Middle School Youth Governor

Congratulations to SFCS 7th Grade student Jack Cummings, for being elected Middle School Youth Governor of the 2015 South Carolina YMCA Middle School YIG Conference. Jack was elected by the 425+ Middle School students from across the state of South Carolina who attended the YIG Conference this year.  "I loved being able to learn more about how our government works," said Jack.  After a campaign speech to the entire Middle School conference, campaigning among his peers and then a final speech at the Governor's Banquet, Jack was elected to the high office of Governor.  Jack's prior YIG and Model UN experience, as well as his excellent leadership skills, wit and charisma helped propel him to victory.  "It felt awesome to be elected," added Jack.  "I can't wait to represent Shannon Forest at the conference in 2015."  Congratulations Jack, Shannon Forest is proud of you!

UPPER SCHOOL NEWS

Now is a Great Time to Serve the Community!

In just the first three months of school, our students in 7th - 12th Grades have clocked more than 2,125 hours of service!  They have touched 28 organizations in both Greenville and Spartanburg counties through their hard work and dedication to lessen the burden so many people carry by themselves.  A certain number of hours of service are required of SFCS students and the school provides many opportunities throughout the school year in which the students can gain up to 20 hours.  Students are expected to get all additional hours on their own time.  Below is a table that shows the number of service hours each student is expected to accomplish at their specific grade level:

7th Grade | 22 Hours

8th Grade | 24 Hours

Freshman | 26 Hours

Sophomore | 28 Hours

Junior | 30 Hours

Senior | 32 Hours

Total upon Graduation| 162 Hours

Now is a great time for students and families to consider serving the community and meeting the requirements for this school year.  There are many organizations looking for help during the holiday season.  Students can return to one of the organizations where they worked during an IMPACT Day or there are several more opportunities listed on the link below.

If you want to see how many hours your child has logged this school year, you can access that information on RenWeb/ParentsWeb.  Once you login, click on Family Information, click on Family Home, select your child's name and then click on the tab for Service Hours.  If you have any further questions, you can contact Joanne Heiser at jheiser@shannonforest.com or 864.678.5115.

Shannon Forest 6th Grade students enjoyed a Greek Festival that made history come to life at the end of their unit on Greece.  Students crafted columns, made masks and sang songs about the culture. Thank you to all of the parents who made the event possible.  Pictured are Baylor Hinson, Clark Young, Michael Rice-Webber and Hagan Johnson.

The 7th Grade History class recently completed a challenge where they worked in a group and designed a business of their choice. Students planned, organized and presented their dream business to the class. Jacob Goin, Luke Alsborg, Virginia Shealy and Zachary Kurta presented the opening of a food truck featuring American foods.  It was a remarkable day to see these students inspired and dreaming big about their future!
