Generous Donation Marks Beginning of Lower School STEM Lab!

Thanks to a generous donation from a Lower School family, SFCS is pleased to announce Stage 1 of a Lower School STEM Lab.  STEM education focuses on fields under the umbrella of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, inspiring students to think creatively and innovatively. As students discover problems and develop solutions, they shift away from learning isolated facts and move towards experience-based discovery and inquiry.  The Stage 1, new lab will include equipment and resources needed to begin phasing in STEM-based opportunities for our youngest students.  "This generous donation will provide our students with ongoing opportunities to learn by doing - to learn to think with their heads, their hearts and their hands," commented Thomas Riddle, SFCS Vice-President and Director of Academics.  "The tools that they will have at their disposal will allow students to make new discoveries as they develop a 'maker mindset', increase the capacity to become more effective problem-solvers, and have fun while doing so," added Riddle.  We are thankful for this opportunity to provide the latest technology and resources to our students!

It's IMPACT Service Day Time Again!

Our first IMPACT Service Day was a great success with students in 7th - 12th Grades serving 19 different organizations throughout the Upstate area.  On Friday, October 31, our students will once again be the hands and feet of Christ to those in need.

  • ALL students should report to the West Campus, (US) Gymnasium at 8:00 a.m. on Friday morning.
  • ALL students MUST wear tennis shoes on IMPACT Service Day.
  • Please dress appropriately for a work day - i.e. clothing that can get dirty or messy and meets dress code requirements.
  • Bring a water bottle and snack for the morning.
  • All groups will be going out to lunch.  Be sure to bring money to buy lunch or bring a lunch.
  • This is a FULL school day.  Any absences will be recorded as unexcused and the students will be required to make up the 5 service hours they would have received toward their total requirement for the year.

Shannon Forest feels that it is a privilege to be a part of serving the community in which we live.  Philippians 2:3-4 tells us, "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others."   We're looking forward to a great day!

The ASVAB Career Exploration Program is designed to help students learn more about themselves.  It can help identify a student's interests, clarify what is important to them and help them better understand their abilities.  This test is an important element of the EXPLORE Program at Shannon Forest, and will help guide students as they think and plan for college and their future careers.  (The ASVAB is administered by the Armed Services; however, the scores will NOT be released to anyone other than the students.) Sophomores will need to purchase or bring a lunch.  Dismissal  will be at 4:00 p.m.

LOWER SCHOOL NEWS

4th & 5th Grades to Learn Bicycle Skills & Safety

Shannon Forest is excited about an opportunity to partner with Safe Kids Upstate and Greenville Children's Hospital to do a unit on bicycle skills and safety!  Lower School PE teacher Stephanie Webb attended a workshop last year, and was able to get our school on the list to participate in the program.  The unit will begin the week of Monday, November 3.  Bikes and helmets will be provided for each child.  Each student will also receive a surgical cap with his or her name on it to wear under the helmet and it will be kept in an individual Ziploc bag.  The first session will be in the classroom where the students will watch a safety video, learn traffic signs and signals when riding and take a bicycle safety quiz.  Sessions two, three and four will take place outside on the East Campus (LS) Soccer field.  Students will not be riding bikes in the parking lot or on the roads.  Greenville has some wonderful and safe places to ride bikes and it is a great physical activity to take part in as a family.  Please make sure your 4th or 5th Grade student wears pants instead of shorts/skirts for the unit, along with socks and tennis shoes.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Stephanie Webb at swebb@shannonforest.com.

INTERNATIONAL PROFILE

It's A Year of "Firsts" for Ivan Mitrovic!

This week's International Student Profile features senior Ivan Mitrovic from Belgrade, Serbia.  This is a year of "firsts" for the senior - his first year with 22ft Academy and his first time in the United States!  It is not however, his first basketball experience.  Ivan has played the sport on club teams back home for almost eight years.  His transition to Shannon Forest and Greenville has been a smooth one, with little or no language problems.  Ivan's biggest adjustment was going from being an only child to one of seven 22ft "brothers" living in the same house!  "I really like Greenville," remarked Ivan.  "It's nice and quiet."  He has found his classmates and teachers very friendly and helpful.  Ivan's favorite class is Health and Nutrition with Mrs. Overby.  He has traveled extensively throughout Europe and is looking forward to going home for Christmas break to see his mom and dad.  Ivan's mother runs her own ballet school and his father is an air traffic controller.  We're glad you're here, Ivan!
