Woodstock Duathlon

Sunday, September 23, 2012, marked the inaugural running of the Woodstock Duathlon.  The run/cycle/run race hosted 230 participants.  The two races: short course (1K, 20K, 1K) and the long course (10K, 40K, 5K) evenly split male and female participants; however, the short course brought out many fist time athletes.

Participants commented on how well the race was organized and the plentiful number of volunteers on hand.  The weather cooperated and gave the participants a chilly but clear day to compete.

Special thanks are due to the City of Woodstock, the Woodstock Recreation Department as well as a host of sponsors including: Woodstide Home Remodeling, Northwest Healthcare, The Running Depot, Pauly Toyota, Fast Finish Coaching, Clemen Roof Wheel Werks and Centegra Health System.

Greetings!

Under the direction of Landscaper Tom Nierman, a volunteer group from Leadership Greater McHenry County will help build a memorial honoring Todd School for Boys on Hearthstone's campus. Todd School's most famous alum is Orson Welles, best known for his acting, directing, writing and producing of films. Hearthstone was selected as one of several project sites for LGMC's annual "Lend A Hand Day" on October 20th. The memorial will be built at the site of the newly constructed Prairie Homes of Hearthstone, where Grace Hall was located when the school was in operation.

New Nursing Programs

Three new nursing programs have been initiated to focus on quality of life and care for our residents at Hearthstone Manor.

     1. Wound Care - Dr. Pryor of the Vohra Wound Physicians now provides expert wound and skin care;
     2. Pacemaker testing and holter monitoring  are now available;
     3. Testing on anti-coagulation therapy are performed by our nurses.

These new programs provide these essential services on site without the need for a trip to the hospital or doctor's office.

A Lesson From Mickey  Mickey

JoAnn Fries, the Director of the Hearthstone Early Learning Center, showed off her new Mickey Mouse watch to members of the Hearthstone Board of Directors last week.  The kids love the watch and they all want to seek it.  For me, said Fries, the watch is a symbol of two important lessons.  The first is to remember my call to care children.  The second is not to take myself too seriously.  What a great lesson for all of us from a teacher who knows what she's talking about.

South Pole Amundsen
What Do You Believe?

In 1911 Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott made attempts to be the first to reach the South Pole. Needless to say both men were risk takers. Both men had extensive arctic experience. But there were differences. Amundsen was more of a traditionalist and Scott preferred trying new methods he thought might give him an edge.
