Rev. Phillips article, part 3

One of the highlights of our visit to the Diocese was Fr. Jon's sermons at the Parishes of The Good Shepherd, (which was founded by my dad, the late Rev. Dr. Kutta), St Andrea, and Ngh'umbi, my native village.

A Warm Welcome (Ngh'umbi and their desire for a hospital)
Nearly towards the end of our visits at the Diocese, we drove to Ngh'umbi to visit the local parish and to discuss with the Christians and village leadership about the Diocesan plan to build a hospital to serve Ngh'umbi and the nearby villages. When our car approached the village, we were met with traditional dances from mothers' union, men, young people, and a huge group of children singing welcome songs for us. The joy of the village was tremendous!  We came out from the car and we danced with them all the way to the church.

We had a very important meeting with church and village leadership about the desire to have a hospital that will meet health care challenges in the village.  The church and the village council have joined hands to ask the Anglican Church to help make this desire a reality.  Now the village, through the work of church members, has allocated 50 Acres for the hospital and they have promised to help the church in every way possible to make sure the project is completed.

On the left above Fr. Kutta is trying to make sure the car is ready for a long off road trip to Nghu'mbi. The second picture, Fr. Jon is paying the local mechanics after they fix our track. Along the way, we met the villagers gathering fruits from the tree so we stopped to gather some for ourselves.

Queen Esther Girls' High School is a promising academic center in the Diocese of Mpwapwa. We thank God that we were able to visit this center and meet with teachers, students, and other staff members. We were also blessed to offer to Queen Esther's the donations and gifts from my former parish of St. Paul's, Natick, through their contributions of clothing, school supplies, and personal hygiene products.         All what we provided were vital supplies with urgent necessity, however, it still was not enough to meet all the students needs.

How do we Thank Them?

As we exited the church on Sunday morning, I commented to Phillip on how lovely the Emmaeus Chapel looked. Over the past few weeks, Gail Frigon and her son Bill redecorated it and restored it. As Ginny Bliss had pointed out during announcements, with the new blue vertical blinds covering the choir's file cabinets, and the refurbished furniture, "...the chapel looks like a chapel again!" Phillip's reply to me was "How do we thank them for all their hard work?"

And how do we say thank you to Bob Dorn and Alisa West? Working together they have repainted all the walls that were damaged by water seeping in from this winter's melting ice dams. After the Sunday morning service, Bob took me downstairs to see the progress they have made. Bob and Alisa have painted the entire east wall, along with the stained ceiling tiles; and then Bob painted four of those large pillars that hold up our ceiling. He rented a sander to sand the entire floor before priming it and re-painting it, including the baseboards. Their final step (the frosting on the cake, so to speak) is that they plan to examine the legs of every red metal folding chair to be sure it has a rubber "foot" to ensure that there is no more scraping. How do we say thank you to them for their hard work?

If you ask them, I am sure they will say that no thank you's are needed. They love Grace Church, and this is just something they wanted to do. In the past, the chapel has been the setting for our small Thursday morning healing services. I hope that, in the near future, we can once again have a weekday service there. St. George's hall is where our Boy Scouts meet, along with other large groups. The hall is can be rented out for Blue and Gold banquets, birthday parties, and bridal showers. This is a wonderful space that boasts its own bathroom and proximity to the kitchen. Phillip has some exciting ideas that involve our youth and St. George's Hall.

If you haven't taken a walking tour of Grace Church I urge you to do so. Check out our chapel and our newly painted classrooms, stairwell, and St. George's Hall. And, just in case, when you see Gail and Bill Frigon, Bob Dorn, or Alisa West, you can say, "Thank you so much for your hard work!"

BLUE ENVELOPES
How wonderful it was to see Veronica, Phillip Jr., and Victoria back at Grace Church. While in Africa the children were able to reacquaint themselves with their grandparents and extended family member who live in the Kilimanjaro area. And now it is Phillip's turn to go. We have placed some blue envelopes at the end of the pews. Please use these envelopes if you want to make a donation towards Phillip's plane fare. As Bonnie said to Phillip on Sunday, "I am making a donation, but not for your flight to Africa; my donation is being made for your flight HOME!" Checks can be made out to Phillip directly.

Thank you!

If you'd like flowers placed on the altar in memory of, in thanksgiving for, or in honor of a family member or friend, please notify Cyndee Williams or the parish office. A donation of $50 is what it cost us to purchase flowers from Nolan's but we can also work with a donation you are comfortable with.
