Quote of the month
"When we want to help the poor, we usually offer them charity. Most often we use charity to avoid recognizing the problem and finding the solution for it. Charity becomes a way to shrug off our responsibility. But charity is no solution to poverty. Charity only perpetuates poverty by taking the initiative away from the poor. Charity allows us to go ahead with our own lives without worrying about the lives of the poor. Charity appeases our consciences."

Fair Trade: Myth & Reality
As awareness of Fair Trade grows, so do a number of misconceptions about it. In this occasional series we'd like to "debunk" some of those myths. We'll give some response from the Fair Trade Federation (or other FT group) and a bit of KVI commentary as well.
Myth: Fair Trade is a form of charity.
Reality: Fair Trade promotes positive and long-term change through trade-based relationships which seek to empower producers to meet their own needs. Its success depends on independent, successfully-run organizations and businesses -- not on hand-outs. While many Fair Trade organizations support charitable projects on top of their work in trade, the exchange of good remains the key element of their work. (Fair Trade Federation)
Commentary: It IS true that many Fair Trade organizations are organized as non-profits, and many people equate "non-profit" with "charity", but it's important to draw a clear distinction. "Charity" is often "giving someone a fish", which feeds them for the day and, as Muhammad Yunus says above, takes "the initiative away from the lives of the poor". In the Fair Trade movement, we're concerned with "teaching them to fish", so they can feed themselves. Fair Trade DOES recognize that sometimes it's necessary to "buy the fishing gear" and our "charitable projects" will generally be focused along those lines or towards (sustainable) health or education projects. |
Freedom Sunday
~ February 17, 2013 ~

On Sunday, February 17, 2013 churches around the world (5,686 at last count) will be joining in a unified rally for change -- for the end of modern slavery. Encourage YOUR church to join in! Click the logo for more details.
"Freedom Sunday is a day where believers and communities unite through prayer and worship on behalf of the more than 30 million men, women, and children around the world that are enslaved today. It is a day when voices around the world cry out that no one should be for sale.
"There are more slaves in our world today than at any other time in history. The church needs to lead the movement to set the captives free. Jesus was the original Abolitionist. His message of freedom will be proclaimed in unity around the world."

The Last Word... Greetings!
Over the years we have discovered a consistent theme for people in all cultures ~ they treasure relationships and they value family. After a VERY busy holiday season for us and Kingdom Ventures, it was time for us to treasure those familial relationships with a 10-day visit with our grandchildren (and their mommy and daddy, of course!).
Seems that there are a few things our family can't stay away from: Water: Where do you go in the winter to enjoy water? Why to Great Wolf Lodge, of course!
... which certainly necessitates bedtime hugs from Violet, the Wolf-in-Residence!
Reading: LOTS of reading and bedtime snuggles with Bapa!
Museums: great explores at the Seattle Children's Museum and the Seattle Aquarium,
and just the joy of being "family" together!

And speaking of "relationships", we're in the final stages of planning our annual visit with our artisans. This year we'll be in both Nicaragua and Honduras. More about that next month!
Until then, continue to Make a Difference,
