FROM THE PROVINCIAL
|
NEW YORK - Pope Francis took an interesting approach in his homily to priests for the Chrism Mass this year, and it was an approach that I seriously resonated with. The Holy Father spoke about being tired. Can you relate?
Maybe this resonated with me this week because I just returned from the Spring ESC meeting which was held in Lithuania last week. It was a good meeting and it was very good to be with the other Provincial Ministers of the Conference, but it was a busy meeting. We also met with the Provincials and Custodes of COTAF (the TransAlpine friars from Germany, Austria, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Romania), as well as the General Minister. And following the long week, we had a nine and a half hour flight from Warsaw to JFK. So, when the Pope speaks about being tired, my ears perked up.
Tiredness and even weariness, the Pope said, are a part of the life of ministry of the priest and religious. He said, "Let us never forget that a key to fruitful ministry lies in how we rest and in how we look at the way the Lord deals with our weariness. How difficult it is to learn how to rest! This says much about our trust and our ability to realize that that we too are sheep."
I would add to what the Pope says that we need to realize that we are not only sheep, but, especially for us, we need to remember that we are also brothers. The Holy Father is addressing the wrong ways that we deal with our tiredness - do we rest by the means "provided by a consumerist society" he asks or do we turn to the Lord in our rest? God seeks not merely to give us a break, but He seeks to offer us refreshment and renewal.
I think a gift for us as religious is that this renewal and refreshment can be multiplied when we seek the Lord together as brothers. We all know that we experience the same kind of tiredness and weariness in ministry that everyone else does - perhaps heightened given our tight numbers; perhaps heightened at this busy time of year. This can add a stress to our life as well as a choice - when we are tired and weary, when we are stressed, do we lean on each other? Do we turn to each other as brothers for support? Do we pray for and with each other? Or do we take our stress out on each other? Do we find our rest somewhere outside of our fraternity and outside of our relationship with the Lord? When we do this, we are leaving behind one of the greatest gifts that we are given as religious - one another.
"The Lord gave brothers," St. Francis said in his Testament, and that made all the difference. I hope it does for each of us as well.
My prayer for each of us this Easter Triduum is that we can find the renewal and refreshment that our God so eagerly desires for each of us. And, I pray that our local fraternities can be the source and the fountain of that refreshment - the place we go to when we need to be renewed. I pray that we can find new ways to reach out to one another in hope, in prayer and in fraternity; to remember that we can achieve great things if we seek our renewal and refreshment together, as brothers. The Lord gave us brothers, too. Let us treasure this gift.
Each Easter is a moment to hear those words of our Lord again, "Behold, I make all things new." Jesus extends these words even to us. Let Him make you new this Easter. Let Him renew and refresh your vocation, your fraternity, your relationship with each and every brother of our fraternity. This is my prayer for you.
Buona Pasqua!!
Fraternally,

Year of Consecrated Life | General Minister Michael A. Perry, OFM
|
"In this Year for Consecrated Life, let us remind one another as friars and lesser brothers that we, like Mary Magdalene, like Francis, Clare and countless Franciscan men and women saints before us, have been called to this same faith, constancy and to participation in the evangelizing mission of Jesus. We are called to preach what we ourselves have witnessed - and are witnessing - in our lives, namely that Jesus Christ is alive. He is risen from the dead! Love, mercy and hope have triumphed in the darkness! Alleluia! It is because of Jesus' resurrection that we are able to embrace our evangelical, itinerant, consecrated way of life as men of the Gospel, ambassadors of reconciliation, and bearers of light and life wherever the Lord Jesus lead us."
- General Minister Michael A. Perry, OFM

Postulants visit novitiate for workshop
|
BURLINGTON, WISCONSIN - Our three postulants - Salvador Baca, Dylan DeLeskie and James McMaster - traveled to the Interprovincial Novitiate the week of March 16 to take part in a week-long workshop along with postulants from around the country.
The workshop also gave the postulants a chance to interact with our novices - Br. Dale Brewer, OFM, Br. Josh Critchley, OFM, Br. Josh Davis, OFM, and Br. Jay Woods, OFM - all of whom are doing well as the novitiate year continues on.
Postulant Director Michael MacInnis, OFM, and Secretary of Formation Richard Martignetti, OFM, also traveled to the novitiate with the postulants.
The annual workshop was titled "Franciscan Community: An Undivided Heart", the formation annual workshop on male spirituality and sexuality and was directed by Marist Brother Sean Sammon, FMS, former Superior General of the Marist Brothers. Br. Sean has directed this workshop for the last four years.
Fr. Mike said of the week, "The Novitiate community was very hospitable and welcoming. It's always a joy to reunite with our current Novices, and to have the current Postulants see what their future home (God willing) looks like and to meet with and pray with the community."
In addition to the workshop, the Postulant directors always meet during our bi-annual Workshops (the other is a Personality Workshop in the Fall) so that we can connect, and continue to deepen collaboration. The first half of our meeting on Wednesday evening was with the Novitiate Team to continue dialogue of common values, implementation of the Common Ratio, and common goal of readiness and transition for Novitiate.

Fr. Robert Caprio, OFM, visits Agape
|
By Fr. Jack Hoak, OFM
SONSONATE, EL SALVADOR - On February 25, 2015, Fr. Robert Caprio, OFM made his second visit to Central America. It had been some years now since his last visit and that is why his current stay from February 25 to March 17 was an eye opener for him as to the development of AGAPE, while at the same time being able to spend some quality time with his classmate,Fr. Flavian Mucci, OFM.
However, due to Flavianīs medical obligations (dialysis twice a week), which limited his traveling about AGAPE with Bob; Fr. Jack Hoak, OFM was on hand to reacquaint Bob with some of the programs within the Association.
Since the first 12 days of Bobīs time in AGAPE was a joint visit together with the Mucci family (Flavianīs brothers, sister and sisters-in-law) who were down to celebrate Flavianīs birthday, he relaxed with them by the hotel pool and enjoyed personal prayer time in the Oratory of Divine Mercy before the Blessed Sacrament. When Flavianīs family returned to the freezing climate of New England, Bob remained and Jack gave him nickel and dime tour:
We visited with the children of our "Street Kids" program (Anzuelo de Dios). Bob had a chance to experience not only the affection of these little ones but also hear an explanation of the job description from each of the employees involved with their social, psychological and educational development. He then handed out cookies to the kids.
After our visit with the Street Kids, we went up the block to the Soup Kitchen where AGAPE feeds anywhere
from 70 to 80 some people from the streets three meals a day, 365 days a year. (Itīs never closes).
If any of those who frequent our Soup Kitchen reach a stage in life that necessitates a decision by the medical staff on hand about their extended welfare, and they are offered a place in our home for the elderly.
Bob also visited our Home for the Elderly; the offices of AGAPEīs social outreach department and the Clinics.
On March 13, Fr. Jack invited Fr. Bob to concelebrate the TV Mass. It was a bilingual to allow for Bobīs participation besides offering something novel to our viewing audience. He expressed his delight in the experience.

Fr. Andre Cirino, OFM, presents at CTU on Bonaventure
|
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - Fr. Andre Cirino, OFM, presented a new translation of St. Bonaventure's classic mystical work, Bringing Forth Christ: The Five Feasts of the Child Jesus, in a day of prayer, study, and Franciscan Sisterhood and Brotherhood at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, IL, on Saturday, March 21.
In this beautiful little text, St. Bonaventure explains how every person, both women and men alike, are called to conceive the Word of God, give birth to Him in their lives, name Him and name their calling, go in search of Him with the Magi, and then present Him in the Temple to God the Father.
Sister Margaret Mary Eder, a Felecian Sister in attendance, said, "Father Cirino showed how the five feasts are all metaphors for understanding the mysterious activity of grace that brings forth Christ in each of our lives."
She added, "The experience was overwhelming in the wealth of spirituality the participants absorbed." Some favorite quotes from Father Cirino are:
--Mary's YES freed God from invisibility.
--The Holy Spirit is attempting to connect with us every second of our lives.
--We give birth to the Word each time we do good.
--Jesus' name is powerful, grace-filled, joyous, delightful, glorious.
--Place the name of Jesus on each person you pass by.
--Let our goodness flow to others like a conduit from God.
Summing up, Sister Margaret said, "It was a day wrapped in Trinitarian, Incarnational, and Franciscan spirituality."

Prayer for the General Chapter
|
ROME - General Minister Michael A. Perry, OFM, in convening the General Chapter of the Order, has asked friars throughout the world to join in prayer for the success of the General Chapter.
The General Chapter is set to take place May 10 - June 7 of this year at the Domus Pacis Retreat House in Assisi. It has been given the theme "Brothers and Minors in our Time."
Below is a prayer that we are asked to use daily:
Most High and Glorious God,
you have called us to follow the footprints
of Your Beloved Son
as Lesser Brothers of Your servant Francis.
Send Your Spirit to enlighten our hearts
as we prepare for the
General Chapter of Pentecost
at St Mary of the Porziuncola.
Renew in us the joy of the Gospel,
that we may proclaim in our time
Your mercy and goodness towards all.
May the Lady of the Angels,
the Virgin made Church,
accompany us as we follow her Son,
Our Lord Jesus Christ,
as we make our way to You,
who live and rule in perfect Trinity
and simple Unity,
and are glorified,
God almighty,
forever and ever.
Amen.
