FROM THE PROVINCIAL
Provincial Minister Primo Piscitello OFMNEW YORK - It is hard to believe that summer is so quickly coming to a close, but this has certainly bee n an active one. From our Extraordinary Provincial Chapter to the meeting of the Provincial Administrations in Racine, Wisconsin a few weeks ago, this summer has been full of activity that hopefully will have a positive impact on our future.

A more immediate celebration that I was so glad to be a part of was just one week ago, as I traveled to the Interprovincial Novitiate in Burlington, Wisconsin for the reception of novices.  With all of the friars gathered there, we joyfully welcomed 14 men into the novitiate - four of them, wonderful men of our own Province.  Among the class of novices is Br. Josh Davis, Br. Dale Brewer, Br. Josh Critchley and Br. Jay Woods from our Province.

As these wonderful men become a part of our Order, our Province, it is always a wonderful time to reflect on our own calling and be renewed by it.  It is very natural for each of us to think back to that moment when we were received into the novitiate, and later, when each of us professed our vows for the first time. I'm sure for each of us those were days full of enthusiasm, full of hope, full of possibility.  We were all ready to set the world aflame with the deepest desires that we had as we became members of this religious community.

I think of St. John Vianney who said, "The soul hungers for God and nothing but God can satiate it."  As we joyfully welcome our brothers to this new stage in their formation, let us renew our own hunger for God, for our religious life, for the dreams and hopes that we had when we first entered religious life.

May our novices have a truly blessed year ahead.

Fraternally,

Fr. Fabian Grifone celebrates Diamond Jubliee
NEW YORK - On Saturday, June 14, Fr. Fabian Grifone celebrated 60 years of priestly service. The Mass of Thanksgiving took place at Most Precious Blood Church on Baxter Street where Fr. Fabian served for decades.

The Mass was attended by many family and friends of Fr. Fabian, who filled the Church for this joyous occasion.  It was obvious that Fabian was very moved and very touched by the presence of so many who had come to congratulate him and wish him well.

Congratulations Fr. Fabian!! Ad multos annos!!

Fr. Claude Scrima, OFM, celebrates 80th birthday

Fr. Andre Cirino, OFM, addresses Felician Services

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - Last month, June 10-11, Fr. Andre Cirino, OFM, was invited to address the leaders of Felician Services in Chicago.

Andre spoke on the topic of "Authority and Power in Franciscan Leadership."  Drawing on the ideas of two contemporary Franciscans (Alan McCoy OFM and Richard Rohr OFM) as a basic framework for this talk, he spoke about the use of authority and power in a leadership capacity from the experience of three Franciscan Leaders: Saint Clare of Assisi, Saint John XXIII (a Secular Franciscan), and Saint Marianne Cope (the first Franciscan woman to be canonized from the United States).

Pope Francis speaks of war, peace, and resignation on plane

Pope Francis said "the unjust aggressor" against the minorities in Iraq "must be stopped" but, he added, no one state can decide to intervene by itself.  The crime of aggression has to be taken to the UN to decide which are the best means to stop the aggressor. He made clear "I do not say bomb."

He revealed that he had contemplated going to Kurdistan at the time he sent Cardinal Filoni, and said he does not yet exclude that possibility if it is necessary.

He made clear his ardent desire to go to China, even "tomorrow," and said he wishes to establish good relations with that noble people.

He rejected the suggestion that the Prayer for Peace in the Holy Land on June 8 was a failure, and emphasized that "it has opened a door" that still remains open.

He made these and other significant statements in an hour long interview on the flight back from Korea when he responded to a variety of questions from the international media.

US Provincials call on President Obama to welcome refugee children
The Provincial Ministers of the United States have issued the following letter to President Obama about the treatment of refugee children crossing the U.S. border.

August 15, 2014

President Barack Obama

The White House

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue

Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President:

As you are aware, we face a humanitarian crisis as tens of thousands of unaccompanied children refugees are seeking safety in our nation.  As the leaders of the Franciscan Friars in the United States, we have been honored and humbled to be of service to these children seeking a safe refuge.  Our response has included being a place of welcome and pastoral care in our ministries in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California and Mexico.  In the Washington, DC area, with its large Central American community, our friars have worked with children in preparing their asylum cases while providing solace to these traumatized children.  Several of our ministries are working to provide the humanitarian and economic assistance which is so desperately needed.  We also have friars serving the poorest of the poor in Central America itself.  They can attest to the rampant violence and disintegration of society there.  Nonetheless, they remain unwavering in their service to the people as they attempt to create opportunities for a more hope-filled future.

We offer this litany of our service not to draw attention to ourselves; we are only doing the work to which were called in our religious vocation.  We offer this account to show the credibility from which we speak and now turn in asking you for increased and directed leadership. In particular, we request that you and your Administration do the following to help these refugees:

1)     We must not return these young people to their countries of origin without them first having a hearing before an immigration judge while receiving qualified legal counsel.  We recognize that Congress left on recess without providing the supplemental funding; however, we believe you have the ability to adjust budgets to make sure we are not sending children back to the violence they left, or worse, their deaths.

2)     While the young refugees are in the care of the United States, it is imperative that they are provided with dignified shelter and care, as well as counseling and trauma support.  Please adjust any budgets to give them the resources that all persons deserve.

3)     We also request that you provide Temporary Protected Status to any persons from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.  We believe the level of violence and social breakdown has grown to such a level that sending anyone back to these nations until stability can be achieved is an act against life.

We are reminded in scripture (Matthew 25:31-40) that a people will be judged by how they treat their "least brothers and sisters."  The current situation, with children's lives in the balance, poses just such a test for the people of our country.  We must strive to rise to the best of humanity by providing safe harbor to these children and seeking long-term solutions to their plight. These are difficult choices and directions calling for your leadership.  Beyond our requests, we commit ourselves to continue in service to these refugees.  We offer our prayers for you and for the traumatized children seeking the chance to live.  May the guidance of the One who called the children to himself provide us all the strength and courage we need to make things better.

With sincere prayers,
