Prayer Service in Honor of Cesar Chavez
Students came together for a prayer service March 30 to honor Cesar Chavez, the American farm worker, labor leader and civil rights activist, on what would have been his 85th birthday.
Mike Kamplain, head of the Theology Department at SJND, said he believes Chavez would have thought his work and activism was complete if saw the diversity and tolerance exhibited by students at the school.
"I live in Sonoma County, in the land of grapes and wine," said Kamplain, "and although I have a long commute, that's OK. Because I am looking out at the reason why I love my commute. It is you, the students."
He continued, "It is not just because of your diversity, your athletic abilities - which are amazing - or because of your academic challenges. It is because of the way you love each other. If Martin Luther King, Cesar Chavez or Bobby Kennedy were alive today, they would look out on you and realize their dream had been realized."

Coach Lippi is Named Basketball Coach of the Year
The Pilots had an amazing basketball season: Coach Don Lippi saw his 700th career win in Kelly Gym, the women's team made history with back-to-back North Coast Section championships and the men's team repeated their journey to the state championship game as the NorCal champions.
The icing on the cake? Coach Lippi was named the Coach of the Year in basketball by the Oakland Tribune and the other Bay Area newspapers. To read more
"Don Lippi is part coach, part master motivator," writes Jimmy Durkin of the Tribune. "The Saint Joseph Notre Dame High boys basketball coach understood how much talent graduated from the 2010-11 team that won the California Interscholastic Federation Division V state title, but he refused to allowed that to be an excuse to not succeed this season."
The Pilots returned to the state championship game by winning SJND's record eighth NorCal championship.
In the process, Lippi, a 33-year coaching veteran picked up his 700th career victory, celebrating a Northern Regional semifinal victory over Central Catholic-Modesto with confetti and a huge cheering section of students waving blue and orange "700" signs.
"This team achieved more than a lot of people thought we could achieve," Lippi said. "But I've seen kids do some amazing things in my long career and these kids did some amazing things. The beautiful thing is they were all pulling together down the stretch."

Little Shop of Horrors Enchants Sold-Out Audiences
For the spring musical at SJND, students sang, danced and acted their way through an amazing production of Little Shop of Horrors, the story of the nerdy florist who falls in love and gets the girl - with the help of a giant man-eating plant.
"The performers play their roles as if the parts were written for them," the review in the Alameda Journal reported. "Bespectacled Dion Harris is terrific as the classic nerd, Seymour, deftly moving and singing with a voice that rings."
The show, put on by the SJND Theatre Company under the direction of Carol Karaguez, Jen Dlugosh and Didi Kubicek, sold out opening night, as well as the two final performances last weekend.
"Little Shop of Horrors is a story that is enjoyable on several levels," according to the Journal review. "There is mystery about the purpose and origins of the peculiar plant. And there is a tender love tory involving two young people who feel they are inferior, Seymour and pretty little Audrey."
