Guidelines for
Resident Room Safety

Spring is a great time to clear out the winter items and simplify things! I thought it would be helpful to share these room safety guidelines for your review. Call social services with any questions.

Guidelines for Resident Room Safety

Skilled Nursing/Long Term Care

We are providing guidelines to help you know what equipment and furnishings are provided in your room.  Our desire is to make your room comfortable and safe for you.  Many of these guidelines are state health and fire regulations.

We thoroughly clean and sanitize all rooms prior to a resident moving in.

The room is furnished with the following:
  • Bed
  • Nightstand
  • Over-the-bed table
  • Wastebaskets - in the bedroom and bathroom
  • Armchair
  • Wall strips for tacking items - please do not use tape, nails or tacks on other walls, doors or woodwork in the room.  Please see note below on paintings, personal art and wall hangings.

Additional items from the list below may be brought in:

  • Television or stereo must be portable and not exceed 30" wide x 24" deep.  Flat screen televisions cannot exceed 26"
  • Telephone and cable services - arrangements can be made with your social worker
  • A solid bureau or plant stand, measuring no more than 30" height x 36" length x 12" depth
  • A maximum of three hanging pictures/mirrors (maximum weight of each is 2 pounds) may be installed by our Building Services Department staff
  • A maximum of three medium size plants, if a plant stand is not used
  • Any table lamp or desk lamp, including light bulbs, needs to be inspected by the Maintenance Department prior to use
  • Electrical appliances in good condition (must be inspected and stickered by the Maintenance Department prior to use) - e.g., clock, fan (guard openings cannot exceed ½")
  • The armchair can be swapped for a chair from   home of comparable size

Helpful hints:

  • Maintain a three foot clearance around the bed
  • Any food must be in a sealed container
  • Seasonal clothing storage bins are available in basement, if needed

Our concern for residents' and employees' safety, as well as the public health code, predicates all of these items listed above.  Safety checks are routinely done, and family will be notified by your social worker to retrieve item(s), within ten (10) days, that do not conform to these guidelines.
