Welcome to the AzAAP Monthly eNewsletter
A note from our President

Improving the health and well-being of Arizona's children requires a commitment from many organizations.  The Arizona Chapter of the Academy of Pediatrics is launching this eNewsletter to keep you current on issues related to child health and well-being and the medical community that supports them. It will also highlight opportunities where we can partner and collaborate to bring about positive change for our children and our future.  I look forward to hearing from you on how we can join forces. Our children deserve no less.

AzAAP Featured at Governor's Press Conference on Medicaid Restoration

At the request of Gov. Jan Brewer, AzAAP joined other medical providers Tuesday morning at the Capitol to show our support for her proposal to restore Medicaid. Before a sea of white coats on the Capitol lawn, AzAAP Board member Dr. Delphis Richardson urged Arizona legislators to consider the importance of providing adequate care for low-income families and their children.

"Children make up 46 percent of Arizona's Medicaid population, but cost a lot less than an adult Medicaid enrollee - at about only 31 percent of the cost for an adult," shared Dr. Richardson, AzAAP board member, shown left. "In addition to that important, small investment we make now are the dividends we will realize for years to come by keeping our children well, healthy, thriving in our classrooms and throughout society."  Dr. Richardson is a specialist in sports medicine and works with the Mesa Pediatrics Professional Association.  He was joined by AzAAP members Dr. Liz McKenna, Dr. Cody Conklin, and other pediatric professionals.

The Arizona Chapter believes that ensuring well-care and health care for uninsured kids will make sure they grow into strong, contributing members of our state.  Additionally, Medicaid restoration means Arizona can end up with up to $2 billion it pays in to the federal government which otherwise might go to other states, as well as providing an opportunity to create jobs in the health care field.

Related Action: Please contact your legislator and ask them to support the restoration of Medicaid because the health of our children and state economy is at stake. Feel free to share the following:

  • I strongly support Gov. Brewer's proposal to expand Medicaid. It would ensure access to healthcare for thousands of low-income, uninsured residents in our communities. One in five Arizonans lacks health coverage today, so by expanding coverage we'll strengthen our businesses and families
  • An estimated 232,000 Arizona children are uninsured. 73 percent of them are eligible, but not enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP
  • 45 percent of Arizona's children are enrolled in Medicaid
  • Arizona loses nearly $2 in federal matching funds for every $1 in state money it cuts from its Medicaid budget.

John C. Lincoln Hospital and Mendy's Place Receive Pediatric Prepared Emergency
Care certification

The Children's Emergency Center, Mendy's Place, at John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital in Phoenix is the latest hospital granted a

Pediatric-Prepared Emergency Care(PPEC) certification.

"The recognition is part of a statewide effort to improve outcomes for ill and injured children visiting emergency rooms, and give parents peace of mind," says Dr. Dale Guthrie, AzAAP president. He also noted that through this program the Chapter and ADHS have identified two key areas for improvement in the state: the need for more pediatric resources devoted to mental health as well as disaster preparedness.
