Volunteer of the Month: Sharlene Simon
Creator of the Down in the Barnyard Dance Party
Sharlene has been at New Beginnings/ Park Road since early 2011 and the children absolutely adore her infectious energy! She works for the PTA national office, and on Playtime nights, she is the queen of song and dance! We can always count on Sharlene to keep the kids entertained until snack is ready with Down in the Barnyard.
Sharlene often brings healthy snacks on Wednesdays, ("playtime yogurt parfait a la Sharlene" includes cereal, yogurt, and bananas). Plus, she lent her planning skills to the Fall Fundraiser and created the Bingo mixer that was such a hit at the Volunteer Appreciation Party last weekend. Thank you, Sharlene, for your super smile and the love that you share with the children at New Beginnings!
Look out for our Volunteer of the Month feature in 2013!

We Like to Move!
Cars, Planes &Trains Month at Playtime
Where do you want to go and how do you get there? This January, children at Playtime wrote about their dreams and and creating dreamcatchers to reflect on Martin Luther King Jr's legacy. Then they got moving! Children created egg carton school buses, raced through obstacle course, painted using the wheels of toy trucks, made paper airplanes and balloon rockets, and built delicious car-shaped snacks, while learning what an axle is.
The month ended with an exciting field trip to the National Air and Space Museum! Children from DC General, Park Road and Turning Point explored the museum and watched a 3D movie along with energetic volunteers who lgot to spend the day exploring as well!

This month, teens at DC General role-played their interpretations of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's writings together. Last week, nine teenagers took advantage of Teen Night's support and created resumes and signed up to participate in DC's Summer Youth Employement Program. We are proud of our teens!
Meet our New Site Manager!
Playtime Project is thrilled to announce that Eddie Moat will be stepping into the Site Manager leadership role at Valley Place and DASH this spring.
Eddie Moat was raised in Washington, DC. He is a graduate of Morehouse College where he majored in Biology.
For two years, he served in the Peace Corps in the Portuguese-speaking African country of Mozambique. There, he led nationwide science fair competitions and taught English and Biology. He is thrilled to have returned to Washington, DC and now looks forward to giving back to youth in his community with the Playtime Project. Welcome Eddie!

Join our Community Connections Listserv!
Oftentimes, families have lost everything on the road to homelessness. Children and their families seek basic essentials like clothing, bedding, and strollers. We are building a listserv of caring community members who are willing to donate gently used items to fill another family's need.

Volunteer Appreciation Party a Huge Success!
Over 50 volunteers braved the snow storm last Friday to attend our volunteer appreciation party!
We gathered at the Getaway in Columbia Heights to mingle, play games and receive our brand new t-shirts! Our favorite part was learning why our volunteers so selflessly give up a night each week to volunteer with Playtime Project. A teen night volunteer offered, "Volunteering with our youth never feels like a sacrifice. It is my favorite and most meaningful part of the week!"
We look forward to more chances to socialize and give back to our wonderful "Defenders of Play"!

We have been lucky to call St. Stephen's Church home for the past five and half years. In an effort to make much needed improvements to their well-used building, St. Stephen's is launching their first ever capital campaign, Widening the Circle,
to benefit the church and the many non-profits who use the space to run our operations.
You can support this campaign by making a donation or attending one of their upcoming benefits.
Tickets are $5 at the door for each:
