Touch, sound and light help heal inner wounds

Veteran turns to innovative therapy to relieve PTSD

Master Sgt. Christopher Stowe knows the smell of death, and he knows what it feels like to have the weight of a fellow Marine's severed limb in his hands. The explosive ordnance disposal technician, attached to EOD Company, 8th Engineer Support Battalion, at Camp Lejeune, N.C., said he began to struggle with the realities of war after a particularly difficult deployment to Iraq in 2006.

"It was the first time I had to shoot somebody," Stowe said. "It ended up being a 15-year-old boy that had placed an improvised explosive device and he had a grenade in his hand. My oldest son at the time was 13."

After the deployment, Stowe was diagnosed with moderate to severe post-traumatic stress disorder. In 2008, he was also diagnosed with traumatic brain injury. But against his doctor's advice, Stowe continued to deploy.  Read More

iaedp Symposium 2013 will feature two sessions on EMDR

On Saturday, March 23rd, join Heidi M. Salonia, MA, CTS, LMHC, BCETS for Demystifying EMDR Therapy & The Language of Trauma.  Evidence shows that trauma is not a frontal lobe issue but a right brain issue flooding the limibic system and assaulting individuals with paralyzing emotions, sensations, and self-referencing beliefs. This workshop will expose participants to the psychotherapy of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) one of the many right brained therapies available to adaptively resolve and assist in the digestion of complex trauma issues including co-morbid diagnoses of eating disorders.  Read More

anorexic back Feds say Texas failed patient who tried to starve herself to death

When Brandy Bell was committed to Rusk State Hospital on May 14, there was little doubt she was a complicated patient with a long history of psychiatric problems. But one of her current struggles was painfully obvious.

"She was starving herself," said Bell's mother, Rita. "She wanted to die."

During the Conroe woman's 16 days at the state hospital, Bell virtually stopped eating. She lost 9 pounds in nine days, according to her medical records, grew dehydrated and lost strength. She began using a wheelchair.

On May 30, she died. She was 33.Read More

emergency room sign First study of eating disorders in teen ER patients suggests an opportunity to spot hidden problems

16 percent of emergency room patients aged 14-20 may have undiagnosed binge eating, bulimia, anorexia or other eating problem

Could the emergency room be a good place to spot undiagnosed eating disorders among teens, and help steer them to treatment? A new study from the University of Michigan suggests that could be the case. Researchers screened more than 940 teens and young adults aged 14 years to 20 years for eating disorders, as part of their visit to the U-M Emergency Department for any non-psychiatric reason.

They found that 16 percent - more than one in every 6 - had indications of an eating disorder. Those that did were also much more likely to also show signs of depression and substance abuse - conditions that often go hand-in-hand with eating disorders. She is the author of "Give Food a Chance" and writes a weekly blog. Dr. O'Toole specializes in pediatric eating disorders and thus and diagnosed and treated over 2000 children and adolescents since 1998 to present.   She will present on Thursday, March 21.  3 hour workshop description:  Young children with anorexia nervosa are not miniaturized teens: they have their own, highly variable presentation and course of illness. Teleconference on Binge Eating Disorder this week was excellent!
Susan Baker
Susan Baker, MA, MFT, SEP
Editor's Note:
This week I was able to sit in on the Case-by-Case Teleconference sponsored by the iaedp Communications Committee, chaired by Jonna Fries, PsyD.
Susan Baker, MA, MFT, SEP, from iaedp's Orange County Chapter, addressed the prevalence of compulsive overeating and body dissatisfaction in the general population, how do we build hope and begin to unravel the accepted shame and body hatred that many clients suffer in order to actually begin to address their
subclinical, but significant, eating disordered thinking and behavior?  She explored a case presentation that incorporated Gestalt therapy and Somatic Experiencing.

Members participating in the live teleconference were eligible for 1 CE.   The interactive discussion was very interesting and we had one professional call in from Kuwait!
