Certification Update

Julie Holland, MHS, CEDS

Certification Director

iaedp Approved Supervisor

Professionals pursuing the CEDS, CEDRD or CEDRN designation are required to be supervised by a qualified professional who has received approval from iaedp's Certification Committee. iaedp has designed its Certification program to ensure that all certified members are able to demonstrate expertise through a range of professional activities, achievements, supervised activities and testing. Requirements for supervision are designed to be in line with these competencies. It is iaedp's view that those who are providing supervision to Certification candidates must confirm their own extensive experience and training in the field of eating disorders.

In August 2012, we redesigned the iaedp Approved Supervisor process to expand the number of iaedp Approved Supervisors available to prospective Certification applicants.  Supervisors are no longer required to hold Certified status, i.e. CEDS, CEDRD or CEDRN credentials, in order to apply for the iaedp Approved Supervisor designation.  Interested individuals are required to be a member of iaedp, pay a one-time $ 75 fee, and submit an application and necessary supporting documentation.

Requirements include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Possess a minimum of 5 years (6000 hours) experience treating individuals with eating disorders
  • Demonstrate work experience and expertise in the treatment and disagnosis of eating disorders
  • Hold an accredited Master's degree or higher in the health or behavioral science fields.A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required formental health professionals, Registered Dietitians and Registered Nurses
  • Provide evidence of active licensure by his/her state licensing board (as appropriate)

There is not currently a renewal process for iaedp Approved Supervisors; however, the Certification Committee will conduct routine reviews of iaedp Approved Supervisors to ensure competencies and standards are upheld. An iaedp Approved Supervisor application may be downloaded on the iaedp website at http://www.iaedp.com/Approved_Supervisor_Application_101512.pdf.

Remember...all direct eating disorder patient hours are applicable toward the 2,000 required hours for Certification; however, all submitted hours must be signed off on by an iaedp Approved Supervisor. If you have had multiple supervisors, each will need to complete and submit the one-time iaedp Approved Supervisor application for review and approval.

For more information regarding iaedp Approved Supervisors, please contact Julie Holland, MHS, CEDS, Certification Director, at iaedpcertification@gmail.com.

Imagine Me Body Imagine Art Contest

The International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals Foundation is proud to present its annual body image art competition, an awareness through art campaign, held in conjunction with our Annual Symposium.

Imagine Me Beyond What You See was designed to promote a healthy awareness and acceptance of body images.  The mannequin art contest is open to everyone; however, iaedp™ is expressly asking treatment centers and private practices with art therapists to work with patients to provide entries.  Mannequins may be purchased online.  They can be male or female forms and are available in different body shapes and sizes.  Some retail stores may donate used mannequins, if asked. Mixed media may be used.

Entries must include a 300 word description/inspiration of your artwork along with a 2/3 sentence biography of artist/group.  Provide a list of the materials you used and submit photos of the artwork in high (300+) resolution jpeg format that shows at least 4 different angles. Entries will be accepted from October 1, 2012 through January 15, 2013 and will require you signing an artist release. Send entries to iaedp.blanche@gmail.com.

The winner will be spotlighted at iaedp's Annual Symposium, receive a financial award, have their photographic artwork used in iaedp™ promotional mailings for a year, with actual mannequin being auctioned at the Annual Symposium, with proceeds going to the iaedp™ Foundation.

Bee Hives Used to Treat Eating Disorders

Bee hives are being used for the first time to help children with eating disorders develop a positive relationship with their food.  The Ellern Mede School, in The Ridgeway, Mill Hill, used lottery funding to rent an allotment plot and buy bee-keeping equipment for up to ten new hives.  Pupils at the school, aged between 11 and 18, suffer from conditions including anorexia and bulimia and receive treatment at the neighbouring Ellern Mede Centre.  Read More

internet addiction

The body of Tallulah Wilson, 15, was found on rail tracks on Sunday after she told pals: "I don't want to wake up any more."  In the wake of the tragedy, campaigners last night called for a crackdown on websites which promote anorexia and other eating disorders.

Tallulah, from Hampstead, North London, was hit by a train near St Pancras station.

Three days earlier the anguished teen posted online: "My life is not worth living when we don't talk. The temptation is unbearable. I just don't want to wake up any more."

beer belly Obesity operations should not be a 'quick fix' - we're failing to tackle the real problem

London - Research has shown that obesity surgery patients don't receive the appropriate care to ensure lifestyle changes pre and post-operation.A review by The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death found that less than a third of patients who undergo obesity surgery received any kind of psychological counselling before their operation and worryingly, a quarter of consent forms didn't contain appropriate information about the treatments, including the physical risks, and the follow-up was also lacking. In a country with such a huge problem with obesity, you'd think we would have formed some idea of how to tackle it, but it appears not.Right now, it's possible to make one phone call and within a week, be lying in hospital following a gastric bypass.  Obesity surgery on the NHS has been rising by about 10% each year, with over 8,000 radical weight loss operations taking place in the last year and probably thousands more paid for privately.

Not all people with obesity have eating disorders, but many people with eating disorders are obese. Anorexia is the most talked about eating disorder, but it is also the least common, meaning that illnesses such as Compulsive Over-Eating and Binge Eating Disorder are kept out of the limelight, not getting the attention or awareness they deserve or need.  Read More

couples therapy Working with Eating Disordered Individuals in the Context of Couples Therapy

Presenters:  John Leavitt, PhD, Kathryn R. Juzwin, PsyD, and Annmarie Belmonte, PsyD
Working with an eating disordered individual in the context of couples therapy involves complex management considerations. Understanding the impact of changing the eating disorder behavior in the marital system impacts both the individual and system levels. This presentation addresses self-regulation, structural/systems approaches in managing the eating disorder and couples dynamics.
This presentation will provide an overview of the function and impact of eating disorders on couples and their interactions and identification of the client as they present for treatment. Understanding how the role of the eating disorder symptomology in couples systems is a critical foundation for developing the approach to intervention and management of the eating disorder and for the dyad involved in treatment. Understanding the role of the symptom in the relationship as a critical aspect of the relationship and the evolution and the regulatory processes that occur in the system. In particular, it will examine how eating disorders differentially influence the relationship based on onset- prior to or during the development of the relationship. The self-regulatory model developed by the speaker will be reviewed and ways to integrate it into the treatment arena itself will be discussed. This workshop will also present a model (Structural Process, Levitt, 2000) as a foundation for working with the system. This involves creating a foundation of regulation at both the individual and couple level in regards to management of physical health, management of self and management of self in the relationship. Case examples of the dynamics and multisymptomatic problems which commonly occur and strategies for interrupting these patterns is discussed. Participants will be encouraged to present clinical issues and situation of relevance to them. Discussion of ethical consideration and therapist survival are also introduced and examined.
