Prescription Drug Collection is Saturday
When is the last time you cleaned out your medicine cabinet? You might be surprised how many bottles of expired medication you'll find. Bag them up and drop them off at the NRH Police Department, 4301 City Point Drive, this Saturday, April 30 for the National Prescription Drug Take Back event. Unused or expired prescription drugs will be accepted between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.; inhalers, syringes and liquid medication will not be accepted.
The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day provides a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications. According to the DEA, unused medications in homes are highly susceptible to accidental ingestion, theft, misuse, and abuse. The take back program is free and anonymous, with no questions asked.
Find more information on the DEA's website or call the Police Department at 817-427-7000.

Code Amendment Focuses on Pool Safety
During their April 25 meeting, the City Council amended the city's building codes to require door alarms for all new swimming pool, spa and hot tub installations and for new and existing pools at rental homes. Homeowners who apply for a pool construction permit will also be required to watch a water safety video.
The safety measures were proposed by community members who are leading the Water Safety 365 initiative. The initiative seeks to prevent drownings, which are the leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1 to 4. For more information about the Water Safety 365 initiative, contact the Parks & Recreation Department at 817-427-6620.

Council OKs Contracts for Trailhead Project, Park Redevelopment Plan
Enhancements to the city's parks and recreation system were approved by the City Council during their April 25 meeting.
The City Council approved a contract with Double D Contracting for the construction of a trailhead at the John Barfield Trail. The trailhead will be located at the corner of Davis Boulevard and Shadywood Lane. It will include parking, an overhead shade structure, benches, drinking fountain, bicycle rack and landscaping. Work is expected to begin this May and should be complete by mid-summer. This project is made possible thanks to generous donations from John Barfield and other contributors.
The City Council also approved the hiring of Dunkin Sims Stoffels Inc. to prepare a master plan, engineering and construction documents for the redevelopment of Northfield Park. The city will seek public input about the redevelopment of the park later this summer. Watch for more information on the city's website and in future e-newsletters.
