"If a community wants to bring organizations together to carry out a project to improve health, what's the most effective way to get action started?"  

A member of the audience asked that question, after I delivered a talk at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on the day after Election Day. I had described some of the results from national research conducted by Wilder Research and the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis that examined collaboration between the health and community development sectors in the United States. Updates from Minnesota Compass
Two Minnesota Compass topics were recently updated to make data even easier to find:

Immigration: Groups at a glance profiles have been updated and now appear in the navigation. Key measures with immigration information have been added under a new cross-topic navigation heading within the Immigration topic

 
Aging: Data about older adults on 16 key measures throughout the site can now be quickly accessed directly from the Aging topic. Check out the new Group at a glance profile
for a quick overview of Minnesota's older adult population.  
Event Spotlight

About 1 in 6 Minnesota students have had an incarcerated parent.

On November 17, more than 100 people attended an event to learn about the impact of incarcerated parents on students and discuss ways to support these students in the classroom. The forum was hosted by the Strengthening Families Affected by Incarceration Collaborative, which includes Wilder Research.

New Research
The Cookie Cart is a youth employment program in North Minneapolis that provides quality, paid, first-time employment training for neighborhood teens. The multi-year evaluation looks at the effectiveness of the program in helping youth gain employment skills.

Invest Early - Early Childhood Initiative
A multi-year evaluation of a community collaboration to improve children's school readiness by improving the system of early childhood screening, care, and education; strengthening and empowering families; and promoting healthy child development.

Applied Learning Institute
The Applied Learning Institute works to support industrial technology education in Northeastern Minnesota by funding the purchase of equipment, instructor training, and activities that connect high school students to local colleges and employers. The evaluation sought perspectives from key stakeholders to identify successes, challenges, and directions for the future of the program.

Highlights key findings from the 2012 study about this growing population in Minnesota.

Supportive Housing Outcomes in Minnesota
A new issue brief and executive summary from our study of supportive housing in Minnesota. The study looked at the characteristics of the programs and the populations they serve, outcomes achieved by participants over time, and the program models that appear to work best for participants.
