Cat Chat Newsletter - November 2015

Dear Cienega Families,

November is a great time of year to pause from our busy lives, take a moment to reflect, and be thankful.

Thank you for entrusting us with your children. It truly is wonderful showing up to work everyday to help shape the lives of over 2000 teenagers.

We are thankful for our Bobcat Family here at Cienega High School. Our teachers and staff are some of the most hardworking, dedicated, school-spirit filled people around. Working beside people we respect and trust is priceless!

To improve school communication, we are utilizing a free App called SchoolWay. We will be using this App to push information to parents and students. Please download the App to your smart phone or to your computer. To download the App, go to the App store or the Android Play Store and search for SchoolWay, or go to for the web application.
1. Create an Account
2. Select your Role
3. Enter the following WAYCODE: roct44 (This will automatically link you to Cienega High School)

As always, thank you for your support in helping to get all of our students college and career ready.

We are Bobcat Nation!!!

Cap and Gown Information:
  • The deadline to order your Cap and gown has been extended to December 2nd. Go to to order ASAP.
SchoolWay App:
  • If you have not yet downloaded the SchoolWay App, I highly encourage you to do so. The senior counselor sends push alerts to your Smart phone, or texts or emails if you don't have a SmartPhone. Go to to download the App. Join the Vail School District, then Cienega High School and then the GROUP: Class of 2016, or just enter the WayCode: 25fdhd
Testing Information:
SAT: SAT registration deadline for the January 23rd test is December 28th. Go to to register.

ACT: ACT registration deadline for the February 6th test is January 8th. Go to to register.

Financial Aid:
  • Students and Parents may submit the FAFSA form AFTER January first, but NOT before. Go to for details.
  • In order to have the best chances of receiving scholarships or financial aid at any of the state universities, seniors should have already applied to these schools. Do not delay any longer if you have not yet applied. For out of state or private colleges, deadlines vary. Go to the specific college website for deadlines and information.
Scholarship opportunities are listed and updated on the Cienega Website on the "Counselor Page." View the site often for regular updates.
Attendance Issues:
  • Any student who exceeds eight absences (9 is 9) will not receive credit for that class. If it is a zero hour issue and other classes are not in line with the zero hour absences, a student will be required to drop zero hour and add a class after lunch. Schedule an attendance appeal with Molly Koenig (located in the library) after December 1st to appeal the absence.

Our Technology Office has made it easier for students to print this year with direct integration with Chrome but it has one flaw. Students under the new system don't have any obvious way to check their balance or even know they have a limit. All students get 40 free pages per school year. Additional pages can be purchased in the library for 8 cents a page or 15 pages for a $1. They now have a website for them to check their balances.

Students just use their District login and then their balance is right in front.

On Saturday 31 October the Orienteering Team took top honors at the JROTC multi-state Orienteering Competition held at Lake Pleasant, AZ.  The event was attended by 29 high school Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps JROTC units from Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico.  Cienega was the top placing NJROTC unit, placed 1st and 2nd in the coed category, and 3rd place overall.

On 24 October cadets participated in "Make a Difference Day" at Rincon Vista and Senita Valley.  The cadets assisted with painting and building a walking path.

On 19 October cadets assisted the non-profit organization Honor Flight Southern Arizona welcome back World War II veterans at the Tucson International Airport.  The WWII Veterans were returning from their trip to Washington D.C. to visit memorials built in their honor. Our cadets greeted the veterans and escorted them through the airport terminal as crowds cheered them on.

On 9 Oct the Color Guard presented the Colors for the Vail School District Beyond Textbooks Super Conference.

On 7 Nov our Raider Team competed at the Rio Rico HS JROTC Raider Challenge. Twelve JROTC Raider Teams competed in the meet.  Our team placed 1st in push-ups, 1st in the 8 x 400 meter relay, 1st in sit-ups, 2nd in the long distance obstacle course, 2nd in sit-ups event 2, and second place overall.

November 17th - 24th StuCo will be selling feathers, 10 cents each. The student buying feathers can select which participating teacher they want to put the feather's on.  The teacher who ends up with the most feathers will be dressed up like a turkey in front of the entire school to help promote Heart Health Awareness. ALL PROCEEDS WILL BE DONATED TO THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION.
Please help your child make a turkey out of their teacher for Turkey-Teacher Day.  Remember, "Don't be a turkey, take care of your heart!"
