Cat Chat Newsletter - September 2015

Dear Cienega Families,
The end of the 1st quarter is just a few weeks away! This year is already moving so fast.
It is a great time to take a look at your student's grades and come up with a plan for the last part of this quarter. We have many interventions in place if your student is struggling. One opportunity we offer high school students is intercession. Intercession takes place over Fall Break. After four days of concentrated instruction in one content area, students' grades for intercession are averaged with the grade they earned first quarter in the class. Instead of starting second quarter with a D or an F, students have the chance to start with a higher grade, giving them a better chance of passing the class for the semester. If you are interested in this program, please contact your child's counselor.
Free tutoring and re-teach is also in place. Please see the tutoring and re-teach schedule in this edition of Cat Chat to find the days and times a teacher is available for extra help. Tutoring, unlike reteach, is open to anyone who needs help.
Parent - Teacher Conferences are coming up and are a great way to help your student be successful. Parent - Teacher Conferences are set for Thursday, September 17th from 1:30-6:30 p.m. I encourage all of you to come to Cienega to meet with your child's teachers any time between the PT Conference timeframe of 1:30 - 6:30 p.m.
Lastly, there is a FREE App called SchoolWay. This App is another way for us to push information and communicate to parents and students. It is a one-way electronic communication from the school to smartphones, tablets, laptops and desktops of those who have subscribed to the App. I would like to encourage parents and students to download the App to help stay connected with Cienega. Here is the link:
Thank you for your continued support in helping our students become college and career ready.

Are you looking for a way to bring up your students first quarter grade? Then check out Intersession. The first session begins Monday September 28th and runs through October 1st. The second session runs from Monday, October 5th through October 8th.  The cost is $75 per class. Classes are capped at 25 students with a 15 student minimum. First Session offers the following courses: Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, World History, US History, and Government. The Second Session offers English (9-12) Freshman Physics, and Biology.
This is an opportunity for students to bring up his or her grade to a passing grade to finish strong for the end of the semester. Parents, please consider sending your students to intercession if he or she has a D or an F in one of their core subjects.  Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. Fill out the attached form and have your student bring it to the front office. We have attached a schedule of the bus routes for your convenience.

If you have any questions, please contact Brandy Dujmic at 879-2033.

You're invited, Bobcat Nation!  Copper Thunder Marching Band is hosting the Copper Thunder Invitational on Saturday October 3 at 3:00 pm in Bobcat Stadium.  Several high school marching bands from all over southern Arizona and one from Phoenix will perform for us, and the evening will be capped off by a performance by our own Copper Thunder.
Come for dinner, even if you can't attend the festival: six food trucks will offer a variety of dinnertime options: Mexican, Cajun, Pizza and more! Eegee's and BTO have also been invited.  Band Boosters will earn a percentage of the food trucks' sales for the day and are grateful for your support.

Is your student having a difficult time in your math or English classes or needs some extra support in addition to reteach, Cienega is offering FREE tutoring Monday through Thursday before and after school hours. Click here for specific times and locations.

Reteach is a proven district-wide program we offer at Cienega to help students succeed with their academics. Reteach is assigned to students for specific objectives based on district curriculum calendars. Students are chosen to attend reteach based on short formative assessments after instruction on a certain concept. Therefore, it is possible for a student to have an A or B in a class and still be selected. In fact, students are given the opportunity to retake the assessment to improve their overall grade.
Students may also be chosen to attend reteach based on teacher recommendation for test scores from last year. When our reteach teachers do not have a specific concept to work on, they will provide extra help with basic skills. This is a great opportunity for students to improve their chance for success in overall reading, writing, and/or math objectives.
Parents, thank you for all your support in helping us provide this opportunity. If you need a specific teacher's reteach schedule, it can be found by clicking the link here.
