March 2015

Dear Cienega Families,

It's hard to believe, but we are now in the final stretch of the 2014-2015 school year! This is traditionally our busiest time of year, so I'd like to highlight some upcoming events and
also recognize some of the amazing things our staff and students have accomplished recently.

Brittany Matsushino and Vanessa Romeo have done an incredible job with their organization and leadership of our Student Council program. Student Council students
are getting ready for the spring assembly along with our annual Junior-Senior Prom, which will be held this Saturday, March 28, 2015 at the Savoy Opera House. Their enthusiasm and hard work has directly impacted the level of school spirit here at Cienega.

Under their leadership, our student council students developed a video for our revised dress code policy to better communicate the expectations of Cienega's dress code to our students. They did an incredible job! Please look at the link in the article below to view the video.  As parents, your support and assistance with the dress code is always helpful.

Our fine arts department is in preparation for their spring performances and shows. Mr. Matsushino, Mr. Vega, Mr. Garmon, Ms. Armistead, Mrs. Gaylor, and Mrs. Latona are all
preparing to show us how incredibly hard they and their students have worked all year. It is this hard work and dedication that make our programs some of the strongest in the state. Below are some fine arts events to put on your calendar.

* Art Show, April 8th
* Taming of the Shrew, April 10th & April 11th
* Once on This Island musical, April 24th & April 25th
* Band Concert, May 4th

* Choir Concert, May 11th

Sincerely,

Nemer Hassey

Principal

NJROTC HAPPENINGS

On Saturday March 7, NJROTC cadets presented the Colors for The Tucson Challenger Little League Opening Ceremonies.  The Challenger Little League is a division of Little League Baseball for boys and girls with physical and/or mental disabilities.  Their ages range from 5-21.  As always, our cadets did an outstanding job and were excellent Vail representatives.

Through a highly competitive process, Cadet Catalina Mitchell has been selected by the U.S. Naval Academy Dean of Admissions to attend the U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar (NASS).  The U.S. Naval Academy is located in Annapolis, MD.  NASS is a fast-paced, six-day experience for high achievers who have completed their junior year in high school.  NASS will provide Cadet Mitchell the exceptional opportunity to become familiar with U.S. Naval Academy academics, physical training, and leadership programs.  Cadet Mitchell's goal is to attend the U.S. Naval Academy when she graduates next academic year.

On Saturday, 28 Feb Vail NJROTC "Raider Team" competed at the Tombstone High School JROTC Raider Challenge. Events included modified U.S. Army physical fitness test, Litter Carry, Biathlon, Obstacle Course, Tire Flip Relay, 5K Endurance Run, Vehicle Pull and One-Rope Bridge.   17 JROTC Raider Teams from across Arizona and New Mexico competed in the event.  Our Vail team was the only non U.S. Army JROTC team present at the meet.  Our cadets placed 2nd in the Obstacle Course and 5k Endurance Run, and 3rd place in the Litter Carry and Tire Flip Relay.

Kalimra! HELLO FROM GREECE!

The Cienega World History Club traveled to Greece over spring break, a once in a lifetime trip for 27 students and many family members. Students took guided tours through some of the most notable landmarks in history, ancient Athens, the Acropolis, the Oracle of Delphi, the Temple of Poseidon, Mars Hill, Greek Islands, we ran in the original Olympic stadium, and so much more. With professional local guides, participants were able to ask questions to the experts and interact with these amazing relics from another time. Next year the group will be heading to the homes of kangaroos, koalas, and kiwis....That's right, we're going to the Land Down Under! We will have two weeks in New Zealand and Australia. If you are interested, please contact Cindy Shroder [email protected] or Jack Erickson [email protected] for more information. These opportunities are more rare as we enter into adulthood, maybe the South Pacific will be the trip of a lifetime for your family!
