Cat Chat Newsletter
October 2014

Dear Cienega Families,

Whether you are a parent of a freshman or a senior, it is never too early to start thinking about what he or she will be doing after walking across the stage on graduation night. If college is in your child's future, I highly recommend joining us for Financial Aid Night next Thursday, October 29th at 6:30 in our Student Union. If college is not in his or her future because you don't think it will be financially possible, I urge you to attend; you might be very surprised.

My son is a freshman at Northern Arizona University. Although I've worked in education for years, navigating the road to getting him there last year was confusing - and nothing like I remember from my own experience! I attended the Financial Aid Night last year, and I remember walking away with answers to questions I didn't even know to ask. Because of what I learned the first time around, I have made a few changes so that when my daughter is ready to begin applying for colleges in a few years (she is a sophomore now), we are more prepared.

Financial Aid Night is just one of the many ways we are here to help you and your student get ready for whatever the future may hold. If you are feeling overwhelmed or confused about what step you should take next (or first)- like I was- please call your child's counselor who will be able to help. Thank you for being our partner in getting all of our students college and career ready.

Our athletic department received an award for 1st Team Safe Sports School from the National Athletic Trainer Association. This award was earned due to our fantastic Athletic Trainer Deana Contaoi, Athletic Director Whitney Holland and all of our great coaches and athletes. Tim Nichols provided this picture for us. Thank you for all you do!

Congratulations to Freshmen Counselor, Eric Boxley who received the Heart of a Champion Award from the Arizona Suicide Prevention Coalition. The purpose of the award is to recognize someone who demonstrates a personal passion and creates an organizational commitment to build suicide-safer communities by raising awareness that suicides are preventable and that prevention is a shared responsibility.

On September 13, 2014, 25 Vail NJROTC Cadets volunteered at the American Legion Post 109 to help support the 9/11 Memorial Poker Ride.  The event was a big success.  Proceeds of the event benefited the 9/11 Tucson Memorial Fund and Missing in America Project.

Gerardo Verdugo, former NJROTC cadet and May 2014 CHS graduate addressed our students on October 17th.  If you taught him last year I wanted to report he is doing very well.  He graduated from U.S. Marine Corps Boot Camp on 10 October and is now on his way to Pensacola, Florida for aviation and aircrew training.

Over the Fall Break, 18 Construction Technology students participated in a Historic Window Restoration Workshop. The workshop was sponsored by The Vail Preservation Society to teach students preservation carpentry skills as they restore the wood framed windows from the 1915 Rail Road Section Foreman House located on the Esmond School Campus.
During the three day workshop, Pima County restoration expert Simon Herbert and instructor Michael Keck worked with the students as they learned how to completely take apart and assemble wood framed, double sash windows, repair and replace broken or missing parts, prime and paint wood frames, and install new glass with glazing putty.  Students gained lots of skills and knowledge, had fun and made great progress on five of the eleven wood framed windows, and they are looking forward to future window restoration workshops.

Student Agendas are being sold in the bookstore of $8.  Laptop Covers are only $15.  Get yours today!

Financial Aid Night is Wednesday, October 29th in the Student Union at 6:30 PM. Learn about your options to help pay for the cost of attending college.

Start applying to colleges and universities NOW! The Arizona universities have a revolving admissions process (first in, first processed). Right now, a decision is made in about 4 - 6 weeks. Additionally the student will be notified if a merit based scholarship has been awarded. This helps plan for added savings if needed or for finding additional scholarships.

College Representatives are now on campus regularly. Have students stop by Mr. Tritz's office for a schedule of dates.

Fall Testing Deadlines for SAT and ACT:
