Cienega High School
Cat Chat Newsletter
September 2014

Dear Cienega Families,

The end of the 1st quarter is only nine days away!

This is a great time to take a look at your student's grades and come up with a plan for the second half of the 1st semester. We have many interventions in place if your student is struggling. One opportunity we offer high school students is intercession. Intercession takes place over Fall Break. After four days of concentrated instruction in one content area, students' grades for intercession are averaged with the grade they earned first quarter in the class. Instead of starting second quarter with a D or an F, students have the chance to start with a higher grade, giving them a better chance of passing the class for the semester.

Free after-school tutoring is also in place. Please see the tutoring schedule in this edition of Cat Chat to find the days and times a teacher is available for extra help. Tutoring, unlike reteach, is open to anyone who needs help. Students are not selected and it is not mandatory.

Staying connected to Cienega High School is another great way to help your student be successful. Parent Teacher Conferences are tomorrow (Thursday) night from 1:30-6:30. At a high school of our size, the best way to make conferences efficient and effective is to limit your conversations with your child's teacher to five to seven minutes. If your child is really struggling and you need more time, feel free to contact your student's teachers to set up another time to talk.

Thank you for your continued support in helping our students become college and career ready.

Are you looking for a way to bring up your students first quarter grade? Then check out Intersession. The first session begins Monday September 22nd and runs through September 25th. The second session runs from Monday, September 29th through October 2nd.  The cost is $75 per class. Classes are capped at 25 students with a 15 student minimum. First Session offers the following courses: Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, World History, US History, and Government. The Second Session offers English (9-12) Freshman Physics, and Biology.

This is an opportunity for students to bring up his or her grade to a passing grade to finish strong for the end of the semester. Parents, please consider sending your students to intercession if he or she has a D or an F in one of their core subjects.  Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. Fill out the attached form and have your student bring it to the front office.   We have attached a schedule of the bus routes for your convenience.

If you have any questions, please contact Brandy Dujmic at 879-2033.

Please come out to the Chili Festival and help support Cienega TSW.  We will be there taking donations for our student grown plants and our amazing Artisan products.  We will be there from 9:00 AM to about 1:00 PM.

Former Vail NJROTC cadets (NROTC scholarship recipients) have started their training at the University of Arizona.  These future Naval Officers are off to a strong start and are doing well.

Midshipman Cynthia Morton
Midshipman Logan Miller
Midshipman Taylor Burleson

Midshipman Philip Wetherbee (first graduate from our NJROTC program is in his 2nd year, he is wearing the red staff shirt)

The non-profit organization Honor Flight Southern Arizona hosted their GI Jubilee on Saturday August 23.  GI Jubilee was a fundraising event to provide World War II veterans living in Southern Arizona a three-day trip to Washington D.C. to visit the National World War II Memorial.   A special request was sent for Vail NJROTC cadets to escort the World War II veterans, act as an Honor Guard and present the Colors at the event.  Congressman Ron Barber, Tucson Mayor Rothschild, other local dignitaries, friends, families, and various media attended the event.  Our cadets (from Cienega, Andrada, and Empire) were proud to assist and were outstanding Vail representatives.

Cienega Boys Golf is off another solid start to the season.  Most recently the team played in the Arizona Fall Preview Invitational in Mesa, Arizona - Long Bow Golf Course, testing the players at 6900 yards.  The team had a 7th place finish out of 20 of the top schools in Arizona.  Colton Gage (Sr.) and Nate Klinicki (Sr.) were top 25 finishers.  Also helping the team to a top 10 finish was Nathaniel Lockard (Jr.), Taylor Smith (So), and Sergio Rivera (Sr.).  The team is currently 6-1-1 in league play, tying with Salpointe at del Lago.  There next tournament is 12-13 September at Arizona National, The Cactus Cup Invitational.  The team will be competing in a Ryder Cup format with 8 of the top teams in Southern Arizona and Phoenix.  Noteworthy is player senior Colton Gage,  who currently has a scoring average of -1 to par.  The 6'8" four year starter is an early leader for Southern Arizona player of the year.  Cienega's David Rauer was 2013 co-player of the year and is now playing for nationally ranked Pima CC.  Cienega's Boys Golf is one of two programs playing at the States Division 1 level.  The team is looking forward to their annual week long trip to San Diego during school break.  Pictured is Colton Gage and CDO's Chris Meyer (Stanford recruit) playing in a recent match with Sabino.  Gage shot even par to win medalist for the match.

Congratulations to our own Ron Burton, Lead CRT (Security). A familiar face on campus, Ron was honored on September 4th by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)/League of United Latino American Citizens (LULAC), for his outstanding Community Service work. Vail is grateful to have Ron in our community!

Cloud Forest, Volcanoes, Waterfalls, Ziplines beach days, whitewater rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, planting your own tree in the rainforest...if any of that sounds like you, you just might be a Costa Cat! Cienega is going to Costa Rica during Spring Break! There will be an informational parent-student meeting in room 512 on September 10th in room 512 at 6:30 PM. or please feel free to see Dr. Rathman in room 512 or Mrs. Conrad in room 524 for details/questions at any time. This year Cienega High School's Fine Arts Department is working together to help achieve a goal that has been a dream of ours since Cienega opened; we are purchasing display cases to hang in the 200 hallway so that our departments can showcase their work year-round. Instead of using the library to casually hang art shows; our vision is to create a professional gallery space for the student's work. This is a permanent solution for displaying work and it will save us countless dollars on purchasing and replacing frames.

The Band and Drama programs are both donating a display cabinet in an effort to bring the visual arts program up to the professional level of their programs. We have already received money from Mr. Hassey's facility fund and the Art Club and are also seeking donations from Cat Frat and the Vail Education Foundation. However, even with the assistance from these sources, this huge expense will not be fully covered by the school and it's affiliates alone. That is why we are coming to you for help. We are requesting that you donate your school tax credit money to the fine art department so that we can use it to help aid in the purchase of these cases.

If you are not familiar with school tax credit donations, you are able to contribute up to $400 if you are married and filing jointly or up to $200 if you are filing as single. When you are filing your taxes, you are able to indicate the amount you gave and that will be given back to you, dollar for dollar, on your tax return. Not only will you be helping out a worthy cause, but also this is one of the few instances where you know exactly where and what your tax credit money is going to be spent on. You can make your contribution by either returning the enclosed yellow form with a check to your student's art teacher or by going online (at the address listed at the bottom of the yellow form) and make your donation electronically. If you make your donation online, please send a copy of the receipt with your student to class so we can keep track of the contributions being made.

Your generous contribution will give Cienega a permanent, secure way of displaying your student's work this year and for many years to come. Please help us make our dream a reality and make Cienega a more beautiful place to be. If you are interested in more information, please visit Mrs. Latona or Ms. Gaylor's Moodle and look for the link that says "Gallery Layout" to see the plan of where the cabinets will be installed.

It is time that Cienega had a gallery space for its amazing artists. Thank you very much for your time and consideration and have a wonderful day!

The first quarter of the senior year is coming to a close. Look for a letter from Mr. Tritz in the mail over break. If your student is lacking credits, I will have them listed on the back of the letter. Please make sure to contact me (John Tritz) if you have questions or concerns. If you have not already done so, I strongly encourage you and your student to download the SchoolWay App and join the group called "Class of 2015" for important information that is push notified throughout out the year.

  • Start applying to colleges and universities now! The University of Arizona has two early admissions deadlines. If all paperwork is submitted and application fee is paid by October 15st, you will receive a decision by November 5th. If all paperwork and application fees are paid by November 5th you will have a decision by December 3rd. After that, a rolling admissions process (first in, first processed) will be used. Currently ASU and NAU only have a rolling admissions process. Right now, a decision is made in about 4 - 6 weeks. Additionally the student will be notified if a merit based scholarship has been awarded. This helps plan for added savings if needed or for finding additional scholarships. Students wanting to apply for the Barrett Honors College at ASU should be aware of new changes in the process. The priority deadline to apply is November 15th.
  • College night is Tuesday, September 30th at the Tucson Convention Center from 6:30 - 9:00 P.M. Parking is free. Hundreds of colleges from across the country will be available for questions.
  • College Representatives are now on campus regularly. Check the Class of 2015 Web page on the counseling link for updates, or download the SchoolWay APP and join the group Class of 2015 to get push notifications.
  • Fall Testing Deadlines for SAT and ACT:

-All seniors attending a 4 year College or University must take the SAT OR ACT. It is strongly recommended to take it this fall if a student has not already done so. Practice tests are available in the counseling office.

-Click here for dates and deadlines.

  • Scholarship opportunities are listed and updated on the Cienega Website on the "Counselor Page."  View the site often for regular updates.
  • Financial Aid night is October 29th at 6:30 in the Student Union.
  • Any student taking correspondence classes MUST complete the course and deliver a transcript to the registrar prior to May 1st. Failure to do so will result in NOT participating in the graduation ceremonies.
