August 2014

Dear Cienega Families,

The 2014-2015 school year is underway, and students and staff are already working hard. It is because of everyone's hard work last year that Cienega earned an A label for the second year in a row!

Earning an A label from the state of Arizona is something our whole bobcat community can be proud of. It could not have happened without the intentional instruction of our amazing teachers or the unending support of the CHS staff. It also could not have happened without the support of you -- our families -- who supported our programs, encouraged your children, and worked with us to reach our goals.

As we head into the new school year, we thank you in advance for all you do.  Thank you for entrusting us with your children and working with us to make each and every one of them college and career ready.

Julia Kaiser

Interim Principal of CHS

NJROTC HAPPENINGS...

NJROTC Cadet Kennis Pannell was featured in the Davis-Monthan AFB Public Affairs website.  GySgt Lara worked with the Davis-Monthan AFB Public Affairs Officer to get Cadet Pannell USAF pilots to shadow for her Senior Exit Project.  Below is the link to the article for your review.  The shadowing was also an excellent CTE opportunity.

 FCS STUDENT CONFERENCE A SUCCESS

The Fellowship of Christian Students (FCS) at Cienega teamed up with the FCS clubs at Empire and Andrada High Schools to put on a student conference on August 9th at Empire.  Chris Fabry, author and radio talk show host, was joined by three members of the University of Arizona's Fellowship of Christian Athletes as the guest speakers.  Each of the athletes shared encouraging words and advice about high school and college life while Fabry encouraged the 65+ students to use their gifts to better their schools and the world.  Cienega Alum Nick Fergerson, now a youth pastor at The Journey Church in Tucson, served as the MC for the morning and the band from Santa Rita Community Church (from Corona)  provided live music during the event.  The event culminated with a hotdog barbecue and students from across the district hanging out and enjoying a beautiful day.  Below are a handful of the students who were in attendance along side the U of A athletes and some recent Vail graduates who came to help.

INFORMATION FOR SENIORS

Welcome senior parents and students!

I am John Tritz, the counselor for the Class of 2015. The senior year in high school is full of exciting challenges and opportunities. Exciting traditions are in place to celebrate our senior's successes and accolades this year. One of the traditions started three years ago is our "Wall of the Future". When a senior has been accepted to a college, signs military enlistment papers, or enrolls in a technical or trade school, we want to acknowledge this achievement by hanging a plaque in the front office. Last year we had over 80 plaques on the wall and over 280 names on those plaques. For every accolade mentioned on this wall, the senior student will be placed in a drawing for a free iPad to be given away at Honors night next May!

Other important information:

-Download the new SchoolWay  APP and join the "Class of 2015" Group to stay up to date on college visits and other important information through out the year.

-Senior Survivor Night for parents and students is Tuesday, August 26th at 6:00 PM in the Student Union. See the flier on the website calendar for details.

-Seniors needing a transcript will now need to request them electronically through parchment.com. We no longer manually process transcripts for students. Go to: http://parchment.com to request a transcript.

-ZAPS Learning Company offers an affordable 5 hour test prep session to help students improve their scores on the SAT for seniors and PSAT for Juniors. A letter was sent home recently on how to register for this class. It will be on 9/10 and 9/11 after school and the cost is $89.99. Go to www.zaps.com to register.

-Fall Testing Deadlines for SAT and ACT:

-All seniors attending a 4 year College or University must take the SAT OR ACT. It is strongly recommended to take it this fall if a student has not already done so. Practice tests are available in the counseling office.

-Click here to access testing dates and deadlines for both tests.

-Scholarship opportunities are listed and updated on the Cienega Website on the "Counselor Page." View the site often for regular updates.

-Financial Aid Night will be October 29th at 6:30 PM, look for details in future Cat Chats!

I look forward to working with the students and parents of the class of 2015! You can contact me at 879-1843 or tritzj@vail.k12.az.us
