Cienega High School
Cat Chat Newsletter
October/November 2013

Hello Cienega Parents,

In just few short weeks, the first semester of the 2013-2014 school year will be over. The grades your students earn will be recorded on their permanent transcript. In the near future when you sit with your child to help fill out college applications, you'll relive the successes and struggles of each semester. The grades you see in Power School may not reflect what you know your child is capable of, but they may limit his or her choices when it comes to choosing a college. Many of our seniors' parents are experiencing this right now! Unfortunately, teenagers aren't always focused on the future, and they don't always believe what their parents tell them.

At Cienega, our amazing teachers make themselves available to provide all of our students the extra help they need to make those grades reflect their true potential. Please encourage your student to take advantage of the tutoring and reteach opportunities. If his or her teachers do not have scheduled tutoring time, ask them when they are available to help.

All of our students will take final exams the last week of the semester. Finals assess all of the information from the semester and are worth between 10% and 20% of the semester grade. They can make a huge difference, positive or negative, on your student's final grade. This may be the first time your child has had to actually sit down and study, REALLY STUDY, for a test. Help your child manage his or her time as we get closer to finals.

Thank you for being our partner in education as we work to get all of our students college and career ready.

RESPONSIBLE TOPCATS

A Message from CatsCARE

As educators, it is wonderful to partner with parents and students as your children come to us ready to learn and grow not only as students, but also productive members of society. That is where our Responsible TopCat program plays a large part. Have you ever wondered what those little numbers below your child's grade on powerschool mean? That number is the students' citizenship grade.   The grade is based on a four-point rubric where a four means very responsible, a three means responsible, a two means their level of responsibility is inconsistent, and a one means irresponsible.   Responsibility categories include attendance, completing assignments, ability to work independently, following directions, preparedness, safety, cooperation, participation and respect.   All teachers give students a citizenship grade and if their average is above a 3.0 (without any ones, Ds, or Fs) then the student is eligible to be a Responsible TopCat. Students who earn this privilege are given some freedom to be self-directed during advisor base time. Students are also given a coupon book that can be used for various activities on campus and businesses in the community. Responsible TopCat has been one of our most successful incentive based programs since 2007. Thank you for letting us help guide your children as they become productive young adults in our community.

LADIES GOLF... A CLASS ACT

Wow what a season the CHS Ladies Bobcats have had!  Their overall record -  7 wins 4 losses.  2 ladies qualified for the State Championships - Senior Julia Johnston and Junior Brianna Tibbetts.  The Ladies won every three team match they played in.  And they made some amazing friends.

The ladies may never remember the overall record or even the personal best rounds posted by each of them but they will remember competing and befriending the Ladies from Palo Verde High School.

Here is the story.

The Lady Cats met Palo Verde at Fred Enke golf course.  Both teams became friends very quickly but what the CHS girls noticed was they didn't have team un
iforms, their golf gloves didn't fit, the golf balls they were using looked like they had been found in the desert.  During play and conversation the CHS ladies found out the every thing they had were items no one else wanted (the shirts they wore had been rejected by the football team), their gloves came from the lost and found bind at the Golf Course, and the balls were all found at the course while walking through the desert, and they didn't have team golf bags.

On the other hand the CHS Ladies had an amazing support network this year.  Tax credit donations covered uniforms, hats, and balls, golf bags and all other expenses.  The CHS Ladies believe that they are so fortunate with everything they have, that they wanted to give something back to girls that became friends.  A week late your CHS Ladies visited the Palo Verde campus and dropped off golf ball, gloves, and tees as a gesture of friendship.  They were greeted by PV administrators, yearbook staff, cameras, teachers, coaches, and a few tears.  "Friendly" competition was taken to a new level.

Respectfully,
Honored to be their Coach
John Nunes

Senior Julia Johnston - Team Captain (Season personal best score - 41 State Qualifier) Junior Brianna Tibbetts (Best score - 46 State Qualifier) Junior Taylor Hawkins, Junior Savanna Medina, Sophomore Sara Sillik, Freshman Brooke Caldwell, Freshman Cierra Sanchez.

RETEACH

Reteach is one of the many opportunities Cienega offers its students. If your child is assigned Reteach, it is because he/she needs more instruction to master a concept. Math Reteach is Tuesdays and Thursdays during Advisor Base. English Reteach (9th and 10th) is zero hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students who do not attend will be assigned after school detention. Thank you for your support in getting all of our students college and career ready!

EIGHTH ANNUAL VAIL JINGLE TRAIL
TO BENEFIT LINK CREW

The Eighth Annual Vail Jingle Trail 5k Run/Walk and Santa's Little Helper 1k will take place on Saturday, December 14th.  This year the run will benefit  Link Crew's "Adopt-A-Family" and the Shyann Kindness Project Toy Drive.  For the last seven years we have collected hundreds of toys for needy children during the holiday season.  We look forward to working with Link Crew again to help them raise funds to make a family's holiday much brighter.  If you don't want to participate but still would like to donate a toy, you can drop it off in the front office with Mrs. Taggart and or make donations directly to Link Crew for their fundraiser. The fee for the 5k is $20 with a new, unwrapped toy and $10 with a new, unwrapped toy for the 1k. Click here  for a flier.

We hope to see you there and we wish all of you a joyful holiday season!
