Dear Cienega Families:
I want to thank for your continued support through the second quarter. We came back to school with our incredible Be Kind mural that was made by a collaborative efforts of our BE KIND Club students and sponsors and our ART CLUB students and sponsors. The dedication of Mrs. Cindy Shroder and Ms. Monica Gaylor will always be a part of Cienega.
The Vail Naval Cadet Corps - (our Navy JROTC) has made an impact in the community as the students present the colors at athletic events and within the community. To see teens in uniform who want to serve our country is humbling. The Cadet Corp will flourish and support all Vail high schools. The Cadet Corps is under the leadership of teachers Lt. Cmdr. George Murga and Cpl. Bob Maņas.
The talent continued through the incredible performances of Les Miserables. This moving play was seen by hundreds of students, staff, and community members. Mr. Jeff Garmon continues to teach a craft that inspires many teens. Staff, students, parents, and community supporters volunteer behind the scenes to make the productions possible.
Fall sports came to and end with so many student-athletes and coaches representing Cienega well. Again, parents, community, staff, spouses - the hours of dedication and trips across the state support our stellar athletic programs.
Students in Cienega clubs across campus are making connections with one another and staff. Students are participating in service opportunities. Giving so unselfishly of their time to make a difference on campus, in our community, and in outreach activities around the world. Teachers work late into the evening and on weekends to be with teenagers.
Our Copper Thunder Marching Band and Color Guard is the only high school band from Southern Arizona to be competing in the State Marching Band Competition this past weekend. The hours and dedication of the band and color guard students, directors: Mr. Jim Matsushino, Mr. Jeremy Vega, and Mrs. Tracey Rowley is uncompromising. Parents and community have given countless hours to support the Copper Thunder.
Vail Pride Day, is approaching in the February. It is time to solicit nominations for Cienega Teacher of the Year and Cienega Support Staff of the Year. Please take a few minutes over the next week to click on the link below to nominate an outstanding and deserving teacher and a support staff member from Cienega. We have teens on campus starting at 6:00 am and many do not leave until well after 8:30pm. Staff at Cienega are dedicated and live Connections, High standards Success. We are committed to partner with you in teaching your student to be kind, trustworthy, respectful, and educated . Please take a few minutes to nominate teachers and /or counselors (Teacher of the Year Nomination) and secretaries, office clerks, paraprofessionals (Support Staff of the Year Nomination) who have an influence with your students. To receive a nomination is humbling and meaningful to staff who are dedicated to your sons and daughters and our schools. The links for the Vail Pride Day nominations are below with the deadline date of December 10th. Thank you so much for your continued support and partnership to Cienega High School.
As we begin our season of reflection and thankfulness, we wish each and every Cienega family a safe and peaceful Thanksgiving!

CHS RANKED 26TH IN STATE!
|
The 2012 National Best High School List from U.S. News & World Report, is out and eleven of Tucson's high schools are on it!
In order to make the list there was a three step process that each of the 22,000 high schools in the U.S. had to pass:
Step one: determining if the school's students performed better than the average student in the state. If step one is reached then on to step two: the school's least-advantaged students must perform better than average in the state. And lastly if the first two steps are met then on to step three: the school is evaluated on college readiness using Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate test scores. Schools were given a college readiness score based on the number of seniors who took one or more AP/IB test before or during their senior year divided by the total number of seniors and how well those students scored on the test.
It was according to these three steps that the following 11 schools received Gold or Silver medals; plus their rank in Arizona (inside parenthesis) and in the U.S.
- University High, TUSD - (#1); #4 Gold
- BASIS Tucson BASIS - (#2); #6 Gold
- Sonoran Science Academy Sonoran Science Academy - (#4); #144 Gold
- Catalina Foothills, Catalina Foothills - (#7); #378 Gold
- Sabino, TUSD - (#13); #1084 Silver
- Canyon Del Oro, Amphitheater - (#14); #1159 Silver
- Ironwood Ridge, Amphitheater - (#15); #1179 Silver
- Tanque Verde, Tanque Verde - (#18); #1253 Silver
- Luz-Guerro Early College Luz Academy - (#20); #1316 Silver
- Cienega, Vail - (#26); #1675 Silver
- Flowing Wells, Flowing Wells - (#28); #1751 Silver

COOPER THUNDER MARCHING BAND
|
Copper Thunder Marching Band has wrapped up their most successful season ever. Their show this year was "Camelot: The Once and Future King." In addition to entertaining us weekly at football games, they competed in several festivals this fall, including the UA Band Day and Flowing Wells' Show of Shows. Over the course of the season they improved weekly, and by the state marching Festival November 3 in Chandler, earned a rating of Superior, with captions in Music Performance, Percussion and Auxiliary. Captions are special recognitions given for Visual Performance, Musical Performance, Auxiliary, Percussion and General Effect. CTMB placed 7th among the twenty-two bands in Division II that had earned a berth in the Festival. This qualified them for the Championship this past weekend. They ended the season as the only band from Southern Arizona that qualified to play at "Super State," the Arizona Band & Orchestra Directors Association Championship. They finished in the top 10 Division II bands in the state, and we could not be more proud of them!

The 2013 Cienga Bobcat Solar Runner is up in the air - literally. Students are busy are busy in the planning, design and fundraising stages of the Solar Go-Kart that will represent Cienega in the Racing the Sun Challenge sponsored by the UofA Tech Park. This years Solar Go-Kart Club hopes to stand on the shoulders of last year's club, and build this next generation Kart even better than the first. Stay tuned for more info.

BE KIND MURAL...JUST THE BEGINNING
|
Last year at the Vail Chamber of Commerce meeting, I had the honor to hear, Janette Mare from Ben's Bells (Ben's mom) speaking about the initiative hitting Tucson by storm on the anti bullying / mean girls movement in Tucson. Last year, Cienega became a "Kind School". We use lessons during our advisory time and have various guest speakers to talk with students about bullying and intimidation. Last year, Sheri Mitzel, teacher and I started the Impact Club, students who wanted to make a Kind Impact at Cienega and within the Vail Community. Many students and staff became involved and started kind activities around the school. Ben's Bells sponsored the premier of the Finding Kind documentary at the Fox Theater in January. The students and staff attended the event. This was powerful. The club members started writing positive kind quotes on the chalkboards around campus. They painted green flowers on the corners of the sidewalks as a visual reminder to be kind. Jeanette Mare brought a professional athlete and both spoke to our entire student body of 2000+ students and staff of her story and the power of being kind. I was at Sahuaro HS in May and saw this beautiful Be Kind mural and knew I wanted one for Cienega. When I followed up on this, it was $1000 to pay for the artist in residence to work with high school students to paint tiles and create the mural on a campus wall. This project was designed for all of the TUSD high schools and a few TUSD middle schools. Again, I wanted this in Vail and at Cienega. Mrs. Cindy Shroder presented a grant proposal to the Vail Education Foundation; $1500 was granted for the mural along with the costs for two showings of the Finding Kind movie on our campus. The Impact Club changed names to the "Be Kind Club". This year, teacher, Cindy Shroder, became a sponsor of the Be Kind Club. Shirts were designed for the 60 student members. The movie showings were a success. The outreach powerful, the club grew from 15 students to 60. Mrs. Shroder partnered with Ms. Gaylor and the art club to create the mural. Several of our students from the Be Kind Club and the Art Club and teachers Monica Gaylor, Cindy Shroder, Meghan McKinney, Marian Smith, and Ruth Latona, spent two Saturdays and a Thursday morning creating the parts of the mural. The artist brought the finished pieces to the school and students and staff placed pieces of the mural on the wall during the intercession break to complete the Be Kind mural. Here is the permanent visual reminder for our students and staff about the power to Be Kind. I wanted to share our story - and the power of students and staff making a difference at their school and within their community. Dr. Tricia Peņa, Principal

STARS STRIPES AND HEROES |

Staff Sgt. Othon greets Bobcat students
With Veterans' Day upon us, Cienega's National Honor Society and Key Club have again teamed up to support Operation Caregiver, a campaign to send care packages to our service members serving the country in Afghanistan this holiday season. This year the event was orchestrated entirely by the officers of these two clubs, led by seniors Zoe Linden of Key Club and Jesse Morrison of the National Honor Society.
The event was called Stars, Stripes, and Heroes. It was a carnival of sorts held during Advisor base on the last day of school before Veterans' Day. Linden and Morrison led their clubs in organizing activities and guests, securing supplies, and selling tickets to the student body. The Army and Air Force recruiters were present to talk to students about military life and service, as was the ROTC unit from the University of Arizona (staffed by Cienega alum Cody McIntyre). In the inaugural year of Cienega's own Navy JROTC program, they offered to run a Tug-of-War, a challenging event on a somewhat muddy soccer field! Key Club, with the help of the Kiwanis, brought in an inflatable obstacle course and boxing/jousting ring and NHS supplied snow cones and popcorn. Fry's Market Place in Rita Ranch and American Ice in Tucson both made donations to support the event as well.
Thanks to donations from the community, Key Club, and NHS, we were able to donate 100% of funds raised to the Arizona Chamber of Commerce to help send Christmas care packages to troops stationed in Afghanistan. The event raised $1050. This equates to paying the shipping on 65 of the 1000 care packages.
