EUROBAT reaction to the EU 'Energy Union'
EUROBAT is following closely the policy debate on the new EU Energy Union framework, published on 25th February and with important implications for the overall EU energy policy.

The new energy document identifies five key pillars for the EU energy policy: energy security, internal energy market, energy efficiency, decarbonisation of the economy and research and innovation (R&I). EUROBAT has issued a statement in reaction to the strategy, expressing its support to the strategy and remarking the contribution of battery energy storage to the achievement of the Energy Union targets.

EUROBAT has also initiated work on a report on energy storage that will highlight the regulatory and legislative barriers to battery energy storage in Europe, analyzing also successful markets and best practices and advancing possible legislative proposals to overcome these barriers.

Closed-loop report launched at EUROBAT media briefing in Brussels

At the end of 2014, EUROBAT launched the report on closed-loop recycling for lead-based batteries in automotive applications at a media briefing event in Brussels. The report was the result of joint work with ILA and OEMs (ACEA/JAMA/KAMA).

In their presentations, EUROBAT President Johann Friedrich-Dempwolff, Executive Director Alfons Westgeest and CEM Chairman Karsten Kurz, underlined that all battery chemistries (lead, nickel, sodium and lithium) have their role to play and that national and EU regulators must not ban any particular battery chemistries. The purpose of the media briefing event was to brief the Brussels-based press and partner associations about our policy priorities, and how automotive and industrial batteries can help overcome societal challenges.

Update CEM Committee - ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH & SAFETY

REACH Regulation - Update on advocacy actions

Following the submission of the EUROBAT contribution to the ECHA and EC consultations on the inclusion of four lead compounds on the REACH authorisation list, CEM members and the EUROBAT secretariat have started communicating our key messages to decision-makers.

Joint ILA-EUROBAT meetings were held with relevant EC officials in the last weeks. Further meetings in Brussels and at national level are scheduled for March.

As next step, ECHA will discuss and prepare their draft recommendation for inclusion in the authorisation list. This will be then submitted to the EC, which will take the final decision by the end of this year.

Update ABC Committee - AUTOMOTIVE BATTERIES

EUROBAT R&D Battery Roadmap on e-Mobility

The ABC's e-Mobility working group is drafting the final text of the EUROBAT Roadmap on R&D priority areas for e-Mobility battery technologies. The Roadmap should be finalized in the first half of 2015 and presented during at the EUROBAT Forum.

The group is also working with the Joint Research Centre (JRC) on the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding between EUROBAT and the JRC on e-mobility. EUROBAT responded to the European Green Vehicles Initiative Association (EGVIA) call to submit proposals for future EGVI call topics; EUROBAT expressed interest as dissemination partner and for regulatory issues to bridge with ongoing developments in the wider battery area.

Update IBC Committee - INDUSTRIAL BATTERIES
Review of IEC leadership

The mandate of Mr. Friedrich Kramm, as current IEC TC 21 chairman has been extended for another three years. IEC standardization has been identified as an important instrument to boost new markets. A very important development in that sense is the new IEC 61.427-2 project on "Standards for grid-connected battery storage" to support the market development of batteries for storage in the grid.

For information on IBC activities, please contact Erwin Marckx (emarckx@eurobat.org) or Francesco Gattiglio (fgattiglio@eurobat.org).

Batteries 2020

The  project partners of the FP7 R&D project "Batteries 2020" are in the phase of measuring and compiling the results of different tests with generation phase-one cells produced by Leclanché, which includes battery materials developed by Umicore.

The results on thermal investigations were presented at the European Electric Vehicle Conference (EEVC 2014) in Brussels December 2014. Updated results from the tests related to EV and second life residential applications will be presented in the International Conference of Industrial Technology (ICIT), which will be held in Spain/Seville in March 2015, as well as at the Electric Vehicle Symposium 2014 (EVS 28), which will be held in Goyang / South-Korea in May 2015.

Under impuls of the European Commission, Batteries 2020 joined the European Cluster on 4th generation EVs, which contains also the projects "eDAS"  (Holistic energy management for 3rd and 4th generation Evs),"iCOMPOSE" Integrated Control of Multiple-Moto and Multiple-Storage Fully Evs), "INCOBAT" (Innovative Cost Effficient  Managament System for Next Generation HV Batteries) and "IMPROVE" (Integration & Management of Performance and Road Efficiency of EV electronics)

The aim of the Commission is to foster information exchange for the alignment of EU R&D activities, to gain synergistic technical understanding for future Evs and to coordinate joint dissemination/marketing events to achieve higher visibility and higher impact. The latest plenary workshop of Batteries 2020 was scheduled in Brussels in the premises of the VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) on 16/17 February 2015. EUROBAT attended this meeting as dissemination partner of the project.
