NASIMCO Az-Zahra Camp 2015 

NASIMCO Az Zahra Retreat 2015 for Women was held May 29th to June 1st at "Bliss Haven Resort". The place offered a perfect opportunity in keeping with the theme this year of "Reclaiming Calm from Life's Storms". 30 women ranging in ages from 20 to 70 years old participated.

 

The participants took advantage of the two experienced speakers, Sr. Masuma Jaffer of London, England and Sr. Marzia Hasan of Toronto, Ontario who made everyone feel very welcome and comfortable from the onset.

 

The first introduction and icebreaker had everyone smiling and sharing incidents. The next 2 days lectures, thoughts and discussions were shared on refining the mind, body and soul. Sr. Masuma and Sr. Marzia efficiently spoke on lowering stress levels in the mind and the soul through dua, The Holy Qur'an, meditation, topics like distorted thinking, simplifying your life and getting closer to the Imam of our time.

 

Sr. Aziza Meghjee, one of the organizers, shared her knowledge and experience of eating and drinking to help the body relieve stress. The Popcorn Prayer was a huge hit and everyone shared some wonderful verses and sayings. As everyone listened quietly and reflected, tears flowed and hearts softened. The newly found friendships continued on the rainy ride home.

The Shia Muslim Community of British Columbia recently held elections for their Executive Committee. The elected positions for the term 2015-2017 are:


President: Mohamed Ladak

Hon. Secretary: Shaheen Rashid

Hon. Treasurer: Ebrahim Rehmtulla

 

Ramadhan Campaign Against Hunger (RCAH) - Toronto

The Ramadhan Campaign Against Hunger (RCAH) was initiated 15 years ago by members of the Jaffari Community Centre in Toronto to help provide the less fortunate Muslims around the Greater Toronto Area with food items during the month of Ramadhan.

 

This year, RCAH had it's 1st delivery of food on Saturday, June 20th, 2015, at the Jaffari Community Centre, in Toronto. With the help of the community, RCAH volunteers were able to provide 210 needy Muslim families in the Greater Toronto Area with Ramadhan food items. 

 



The second delivery was on, July 12th, 2015 also at the Jaffari Community Centre in Toronto. In addition to Ramadhan food items, Eid gifts for children of these families were also provided. 

 

NASIMCO is proud to support these efforts.

 

Al-Wahda Sports Festival - Toronto


 

The Al-Wahda Sports Festival registration for participants and volunteers is now open. Registering early helps the organizing committee to plan the event effectively and order appropriate mementos for registrants.

Al Mahdi Islamic Centre - Toronto

On June 6th, 2015, the Al Mahdi Islamic Centre held a historical land event at the new Al Mahdi Islamic Community Centre located at 3270 Markham Road. The event was organized to raise awareness of the forthcoming building construction of another multi-functional and holistic Islamic Community Centre serving East Toronto and its vicinity. 

 

The historic land event exhibited the spirit and unity of the community. With all 650 seats occupied and nearly 150 guests standing, the event was a success. The event included, humorous skits by the master of ceremonies, powerful spoken word poetry and inspiring messages from community leaders. There were introductions of the Al Mahdi Executive Committee, Project Technical Committee and the Fundraising Committee working on the centre project.

 

The keynote speaker of the event was Sr. Nicole Correri who spoke on the importance of women. The resident Alim, Moulana Syed Zaki Baqri closed the event with a message of progress and a call to action while expressing his gratitude to those who were present.

Al Mahdi Islamic Centre was able to raise $649,000 through the generous pledges of the community members and also from the auctioning of the Flag from the shrine of Imam Hussain (a.s.) and the tiles that were also from under the Zarih of Imam Hussain (a.s.) in Kerbala.
