Islam in the News

For Muslims, Ashura a beacon of inspiration for generations

By Mohammed Khaku

Muharram is the first of the 12 months in the Islamic calendar. It is not marked by joy, merriment or celebrations for Shiite Muslims, but with sadness and mourning. The first 10 days of Muharram culminate with Ashura, which falls on Thursday.

Ashura is significant for Muslims because of a great tragedy that occurred in the year 680. That's when Al-Hussein Bin Ali, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, along with his close relatives and 72 faithful companions were massacred by an Umayyad army on the plains of Karbala in Iraq.

The mosques will be jampacked and decorated in black wall coverings with flags (a'alam) and replica shrines (taziyas). Majalis (assemblies) will be held every night during the first 12 days with poetry recited and speeches made pertaining to the martyrdom of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. The day the battle of Karbala took place is known simply as Ashura, which means 10th (of Muharram).
