Nyumba Yanga Orphanage

Lusaka, Zambia - Nyumba Yanga Orphanage is located in the outskirts of Lusaka City in Zambia, Africa. It is run by the Congregation of the Immaculate Conception sisters from India.

The orphanage opened its doors to about 55 girls in 2001 with the ages ranging from 3 years to 18 years old. Most of these children lost their parents through HIV/AIDs and other related diseases. In 2015, there are 46 girls ranging from 3 years to 16 years old. The girls are organized into small groups of about 10 girls with a 'mother' living with them. The mothers help the girls with the cooking and general cleaning, while the sisters help to meet their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

To support the efforts of the sisters, the Marianist Lay Community of Matero St Joseph's Chapel took up the initiative of visiting the orphanage every year and making donations of clothing to school supplies.

Nyumba Yanga Orfanato

MAGNIFICAT ENGLISH

My soul glorifies the Lord,

My spirit rejoices in God, my Savior.

You look on your handmaid in her lowliness;

Henceforth all ages will call me blessed.

The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy your name!

Your mercy is from age to age on those who fear you.

You put forth your arm in strength and scatter the proud-hearted.

You cast the might from their thrones and raise up the lowly.

You fill the hungry with good things; Send the rich away empty.

You protect Israel, your servant.

We remember your mercy,

according to your promise to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
I'd like to take a quick moment to thank you all for taking the time to read the Magnificat Newsletter this past year. As we start a new year, we have many exciting stories highlighting the wonderful work of our Marianists family world-wide. Here are some highlights from last year:
  • Went to many more people during 2015 because of the total SM & FMI coverage,
  • Now has links to Portuguese, Italian, German, Japanese, and Korean text - in addition to the 3 official languages
  • Has a Facebook page for discussion under "Marianist Magnificat" https://www.facebook.com/marianist.magnificat?fref=nf
We hope we continue to have your readership and support. On a personal note, I hope everyone had a wonderful and blessed holiday and start of the new year. My family and I did have a wonderful celebration this holiday, with the presence of my daughter. My daughter was born 2 months before her due date and our family had to experience the challenge of leaving her in the hospital until she was ready to be home. She was born at 2 pounds, and is now 12 pounds! We were fortunate to have her home before the holidays and have been enjoying every single moment. We are looking forward to our first full year with our daughter.

Wishing you all a blessed 2016. Here's a photo of our Eliana Jean:
