School districts can piggyback on money-saving contracts available through two national cooperative purchasing programs under one roof, The Keystone Purchasing Network and PEPPM Technology Bidding and Purchasing Program.  Both programs advertise and solicit sealed bids, which are awarded to the most responsive and responsible bidders.  The result is higher quality at lower prices.

"Thanks to you (Scott) and Leslie for all you have done to help elevate the real story about public schools in Texas. As you well know, we are doing magnificent things in not so magnificent times. The Texas Promise

When Texas cut $5.4 billion from public schools, affecting 5 million students, Texans protested and districts sued the state and won. The Texas Promise is the gripping story of equity, politics, money, and our children as Texas and the nation make historic decisions about education, opportunity and our democracy.

The Texas Promise by Academy Award winner Vanessa Roth is the story of equity, politics, money, and our children as Texas makes historic decisions about public education. The Austin Chronicle says, "Roth truly impresses... the film's grasp of all the key [education] issues, in all their nuances, feels right," and calls The Texas Promise "compelling at its core and empowering through its content."

If you are a part of a k-12 school or district, college, university, organization, association, business, foundation, museum, parent group, or someone who is passionate about public education in Texas, we welcome you to host a screening in your community.

What qualifies as a community screening? A community screening is for members of your school, district, organization, community or an invited group that is not being charged an admission fee at the door; and a movie theater is not selling tickets for profit to the public. Screenings can be held in any venue that has a TV, screen or wall to project the film onto. For answers to all your other questions and to start planning your screening, please visit our new website at www.thetexaspromisemovie.org.

City-run High School Students Complete College More than Charter Schools

Those who graduate from city-run high schools are having better success completing college than students from charter schools.

An article recently published on the Boston Globe website provides statistics on Boston public school grads exceeding charter-school peers in earning a degree or another kind of postsecondary credential within six years.

Worth Ave. Group offers insurance policies perfect for K-12 schools wanting to insure electronic devices. Policies provide replacement cost coverage and protect the devices on and off school grounds. Insurance works perfectly for schools with 1 to 1 programs, designed to issue laptops, iPads or tablets to students and teachers.

EduLege Update Volume III, Number 5

By Andy Welch
A Service of the Texas School Public Relations Association

January 22, 2015

"It is immoral to tell parents they must send their children to a perennially failing school. Parents deserve the right to pick the best school for their child. Some in Austin tell me school choice will never pass, but [Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.] is not the only one who can dream. I dream of the day when every parent has the choice to send their child to the school they pick because they believe it's best for their child."

-Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick's inauguration remarks

Dirty word...

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick didn't directly advocate for school vouchers during his Inauguration address. But no one, it seems, likes to utter the V-word publicly.

But by all accounts, state lawmakers this session plan to vigorously debate vouchers, or whatever you want to call it when the state funds are diverted to educate students at private schools.
