8 Tips for choosing the right Digital Workflow: introducing our new Virtual Digital Mastering form.

Pro8mm has many formats, outputs, framing options, frame rates, and scan speeds, offering you thousands of potential combinations for your workflow. These choices are all important components to your digital master, as each one can affect the look, cost, and ability to play
and edit your files in post.

Over the next month, Pro8mm will be rolling out a "virtual" digital mastering form. Through online video demos, we will explain all the choices one must make in order to achieve the right digital workflow for their project. Our digital mastering form is currently made up of 8 choices:

1) Choose your scanner

2) Choose your scan speed

3) Choose your color timing

4) Choose your framing

5) Choose your digital space

6) Choose your digital formats

7) Choose your storage device

8) Choose Image Stabilization

We have started with one of the most common questions,  #3: Color Timing: What is the difference between a scene-to-scene vs. 1-light color correction? Check out our first virtual digital mastering demo.

Tips for Shooting Super 8: Exposure

Having the correct exposure is one of the most critical aspects of getting the best-looking super 8 pictures. The fundamental issue for super 8 filmmakers today is that too many filmmakers are relying on their aging super 8 cameras internal exposure system to make this critical setting. Some of these systems were not even that good when they where new, let alone 30 to 40 years down the road. Photography is after all, painting with light. To get your best results, you have to learn about light, how it relates to different film stocks, and how to choose the best exposure setting. Click Here to Read the Full Article!

Pro8mm Partners with the Straight 8's

Pro8mm has partnered with Straight 8, the premier one cartridge, no editing Super 8 Film Festival, now entering it's 13th year. We will be providing all the processing and scanning for the festival.

Straight 8 began in 1999 when a bunch of people accepted a challenge to make a short turnaround, no budget, three minute film on a single cartridge of super 8 without editing, but with a cinema audience guaranteed. 25 people: directors, producers, runners, d.p.'s, editors, writers, actors, a d.j, a cinema manager and various others braved the challenge. It was bold and it was loose. There was no expectation. Over time straight 8 grew and great things have happened - like their annual event at cannes and screening in great cinemas and even on tv. The experimental spirit is still there but the films started becoming a lot more polished and clever. More and more people have joined in - close to a thousand straight 8's have been made now. That's a lot of stories that might still be in heads or on paper but are now in the can and that makes us smile.

Who is Hangin' at Pro8mm - In Plain Sight

This week we caught up with Andrew Cholerton, Post Prouction Supervisor for the hit USA TV show, In Plain Sight. For the past few months In Plain Sight has been using Super 8 sequences to re-create flashback scenes for the show.

Pro8mm:Why Super 8 for In Plain Sight? What do you like about the format?
Andrew:  Normally, our show is shot with the Alexa. However, one of our episodes called for flashbacks and our Director really wanted to make it feel as if we were in the mind of our character --that we were seeing the memories as she was remembering them. As we tend to associate warm memories with the look of 8mm, it was an easy decision to go with Super 8.

Pro8mmWhat types of scenes do you use Super 8?
Andrew: We used Super 8 for our flashback scenes. We are warping from our Alexa footage to the 8mm footage which is a great way to bring the audience into our past memories with the characters. It allows for a good separation and feel of past and present. We recorded audio separately and it it synced up very nicely.

Pro8mm: What camera and film stocks do you shoot with?
Andrew: We shoot with the Max1014xls camera with Max 8 and Crystal Sync and Pro8mm's Super 8/85 Ektachrome 100D color reversal film.

Look for Super 8 sequences during In Plain Sight Fridays at 10/9c on USA!

 Healing with Home Movies

Our family recently had the tragic experience of loosing a family member quite suddenly. In the shock and sadness of this tradgic event, also came the realization that we, as the keepers of the family archive, played a big part in the healing process of our family. While we often associate "being ready" with a planned event such as that 50th anniversary party or retirement dinner happening sometime in the near future, there are other times in life that you find you will want to be ready for something unexpected.
