Market Street Prototyping Accepts Submissions
In Quarter 1 of 2016, the Market Street Prototyping Festival held an open call for submissions. In Quarter 2, winners were invited to pursue their projects, which will be placed along three sections of Market Street in October. The Central Market District will be one of three prime areas, with temporary installations engaging and interacting with passerby between 5th and 7th Streets. In all 30, prototypes will take over set down on Market Street from October 6-8. See all 30 finalists here.
Safer Market Street Plan
Just as the quarter came to a close, Hoodline reported on the results of a new study by Zendrive, a transportation startup which uses data to analyze and make roads safer. According to the results, turn restrictions implented along Market Street as part of the Safer Market Street, which is part of Vision Zero, have shown improvement to pedestrian and cyclist safety. The study also shows improvements along Mission Street.
Bike Commutes Are Up, Especially On Market
In April, SF Examiner reported on the annual bike count which showed bike commutes up by 9% in San Francisco. The article notes that a large portion of those occur along Market Street, where commutes jumped 25% from the previous year, according to SFMTA Director of Sustainable Streets Tom Maguire. According to the article, neighborhoods with increased bike commuters coincide with neighborhoods where bike access improvements were made.

Market Street Hub
At the western edge of the District, the Market Street Hub, or simply "the Hub" is undergoing a renewed focus. According to the Planning Department webpage for The Hub, "t his project will evaluate opportunities to enhance implementation of the policy goals of the Market & Octavia Area Plan around affordable housing, coordinated transportation planning and place making." 1066 Market Street Update
In March, SF Business Times reported Shorenstein Residential development at 1066 Market Street received approval from the San Francisco Planning Department. After an appeal by TNDC, Supervisor Jane Kim brokered a deal between the parties, henceforth introducing an amendment on behalf of Shorenstein which would turn a proposed 86-unit building at 101 Hyde Street into 86 permanently affordable units. Hoodline has been following the situation, and cites Planning documents valuing the proposed building at 101 Hyde, plus a donation of $6.5M to an unnamed nonprofit, for a total $19M, more than the originally proposed on-site BMR units. Under the amendment, all 304 units at 1066 Market would become market-rate. SF Chronicle calls the move a boost for affordable housing.
Trinity Place, Venus Rises
Rising between the construction of Trinity Properties' Trinity
Place at Market and 8th Streets, the first mirror-like pieces of a twisting 92-foot sculpture have arrived. Sam Whiting of the SF Gate writes, "When Trinity Place opens next spring, the 92-foot "Venus" will be the main attraction in a public art garden. Read more on KQED.
SF Business Times Office and R & D Pipeline Map
SF Business Times annual Structures publication maps the city's pipeline of major office, R&D, hospital and retail projects. Among the District structures are Market Street Place (#11) 1500 Mission (#27) and the restoration of the Old Mint (#35.) Several other structures border the district, like the 5M Project (#36). Note that the map will not depict the many hotel and mixed-use residential buildings on tap for the Central Market area. To view the map, click here.
1401 Mission Street
In April, Texas-based developer Monogram, debuted a residential building at 1401 Mission Street. Dubbed "Olume", the complex is a 12-story 121-unit building with studio, one and two-bedroom units. According to the San Francisco Business Times, "T he complex has a 4,000-square-foot rooftop deck, 1,240-square-foot fitness center, dog run area, and a facility for onsite bike storage, maintenance and repair." Eighteen units int he complex are below market rate (BMR.)

Pride Celebration and Parade
The 46th Annual Pride Celebration and Parade occurred on June 25 and 26th, bringing hundreds of thousands of people through the District, according to a CBS Bay Area report. This year's theme promoted "Racial and Economic Justice." With over 200 parade contingents and exhibitors, and more than twenty community-run stages and venues, the San Francisco Pride Celebration and Parade is the largest gathering of the LGBT community and allies in the nation.
Tenderlove SF
On June 11th, Tenderlove SF, a block party to benefit Tenderloin youth organizations took place along the unit block Turk Street, between Market and Taylor. Hosted by Saint Francis Foundation and 10129 Foundation, the event was sponsored by Group i. Among the booths at the event was a special interactive art station in promotion of 2 Blocks of Art. 2 Blocks of Art is free, public art walk which transforms 6th Street businesses into galleries. Pictured to the right is the lucky winner of an art kit, part of our 2 Blocks of Art raffle.
Lighthouse Commemorates New HQ With Parade
Celebrating a momentous occasion in a 114 year history, Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired commemorated the opening of their new headquarters with a "Blind and Proud" Parade, beginning at the steps of City Hall to their new state-of-the-art headquarters at 1155 Market Street. The new headquarters boast design elements, easier access for clients. Salesforce Developer Conference
Salesforce held the inaugural TrailheadDX event, a salesforce developer conference, special events occurring at two locations in the Distrcit. Both The Village at 969 Market Street (pictured to the right) and the Warfield showcased special events for live audiences and those checking in from across the world with 130 viewing parties scheduled in 24 countries according to the event website. Sound Commons Unveiled In UN Plaza
On June 14th, many gathered to hear words from Mayor Edwin Lee, Supervisor Jane Kim, SF Planning Director John Rahaim and Exploratorium Project Director Steve Gennrich for the unveiling of Sound Commons, an interactive sound-based art installation designed by the Exploratorium as part of the city's Living Innovation Zone Program, which sets temporary art installations along Market Street as a way of activating public spaces while engaging the public. The installation will be in UN Plaza for two years. Read more on Epicenter-sf.org.
