Smarter Balanced Results Coming Soon
Last spring, students from all over the US as well as SVCS students in grades 3-8 participated in the Smarter Balanced assessments.  This is a brand new assessment that is designed to match the new, more rigorous state standards that focus on the critical thinking, problem solving and reasoning skills students need in today's world.

Next week, parents will receive information about the results of that assessment.  Please keep in mind that SVCS used this first year of testing as time to get acclimated with the assessment and the technology that it utilizes.  Very little class time was used for "test prep" so that students and teachers could focus on learning, rather than testing.

With that said, many of our students did very well on the assessment which speaks to our curriculum alignment with the Common Core State Standards.  Some students, particularly in our lower grades, struggled with the format of the assessment and that is reflected in their scores.

This year, students in grades 3-8 will not be taking MAPs but instead will take the Smarter Balanced Interim assessments so that teachers can use data to inform their instruction and students can get practice with the format of Smarter Balanced assessments.

CALLING ALL PUMPKINS ~
DID YOU KNOW that according to the US Dept of Energy, pumpkins are responsible for unleashing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere if you send them to the dump?   The Kermans at Phoenix Farm would be glad to collect your jack-o-lanterns and pumpkins to feed to our animals (or to compost if they are too far gone).   Bring them to school or give us a call - we will travel moderate distances to pick them up from your house.  876-4562

Parent Council Corner
Citrus Sales are here!  Our goal is to sell 200 boxes of citrus.  That's twice as much as last year but remember we saved a lot of volunteer hours by not participating in the Pumpkin Festival.  The fruit is awesome so it's an easy sell.  Information should have come home in Friday Folders. If you didn't receive it, please contact Matora or Nicole. Think FRUIT!!

Tracking Volunteerism:  Let us know that you are working toward your 20 hrs of SVCS volunteerism.  Click here to document your time. Thank you for all that you do!

Next Parent Council Meeting:  November 10th, 6:45 p.m. at the Keene Campus.

Amazon Smile
Shop through AmazonSmile and SVCS will reap the benefits.  Click here to start fundraising, whoops I mean "shopping" now.

Donations
Debbie Bennett (our favorite SLP) is collecting donations for the Keene Head Start.  They are in need of children's clothes in preschool sizes.  The greatest need is for winter coats, boots, hats, mittens, and gloves, but all types of clothes will be accepted.  If you don't have any hand-me-downs to donate, please consider buying a package of preschool size socks or underwear.  Any cash donations received will be used to buy clothing for the drive.  A tub will be available at both schools.  Thank you very much for helping ensure local children are warm this winter!

QUOTES!
Two boys talking card games in Nicole's office at lunch time. One said to the other " catrupla is 4 cards and teamtruplets means 5".

One kiddo asked another how old his father was; because he is pretty sure his dad is 178 and his mom is the same age!

PICTURE RE-TAKES!

New picture forms will be in the hallway as you enter (or ask Nicole). If you want your child's picture retaken, please send in their current picture packet, with the new order form. You may keep the 5x7 that was included.
