SVCS Mission and Vision

In preparation for the charter renewal process that occurs every five years (our next renewal will be spring 2016), the SVCS Board is reviewing and updating the Mission and Vision of the school.  We value our community and all that it has to offer and contribute to the process so we'd like your input.

Please complete this anonymous survey to help direct the future of our school.  You will have an opportunity to comment after each of the 11 questions.  Click here.

The Board will collect the data, host forums for face-to-face discussions, and if appropriate, use the information to revise the school's Mission and Vision.

Thank you so much for your time.

Worth Repeating: Our New Student Information System & Report Cards

Over the last couple of years, SVCS has been searching for a robust Student Information System (SIS) that incorporates not only attendance and state reporting but also student assignments, assessments and report cards (that reflect the new Common Core) at an affordable price. Thanks to the discovery of one of our resourceful teachers, we have been working behind the scenes to bring Alma to SVCS for hundreds of dollars rather than thousands! It has been quite a process to upload all contact information as well as help to design the report cards.  When it's all done, it will be great, but it also means that report cards may be coming out a little late this trimester.

Here are some of the perks of Alma:

1.  Storm day alerts - you'll be able to choose how you want to be notified - phone or text.

2.  You'll have your own account so you can access your "Dashboard" with calendar information, contact info for staff, your child's attendance record and, in some cases, even your child's assignments.

You will see some major differences in our report cards. The main difference will be that student achievement will be presented in terms of Common Core State Standards mastered. While our old report cards were also standards-based, they used the outdated (and sometimes irrelevant) New Hampshire State Standards. With the Alma platform, teachers will be able to designate certain standards to be targeted by each unit and lesson. Then assignment results can automatically transfer to a tally of mastery level for each standard. Parents and students will see a set of subcategories for each subject area, and the mastery level attained by the student for each. As always, the level is not indicative of effort or potential, but how advanced the student's skill level is at present. Thus many students will begin the year with beginning-level measures, and show a steady progression in subsequent report cards.

We're excited that the new platform allows us to report students' achievement in direct relation to targeted standards. We do anticipate some bumps in the road as we get our feet wet with this new software, so we ask in advance for your patience. We assure you that we will address any glitches as they arise, and look forward to an updated, information-rich report card system.

Artists' Receptions!

Art with Jean: No art Thanksgiving week for both classes. The following week, Dec 3 and 4 at 4:00, both classes will have a reception where artists will show their work to family and friends. Thursday artists will receive "awards" created and presented by Kyla Fiorey. Please let Jean know if you can bring refreshments: contact her at [email protected].

School Cancellations Due to Weather

Our school cancellations and delayed arrival times are determined by the SVCS administration. We will NOT always be following SAU 93, 29 or 60, so please see the WMUR Channel 9 website or television broadcast for this information, starting at 6:00 a.m..

IMPORTANT: We will be listed as "Surry Village Charter School" in the announcements, not "Surry School" (which is sometimes listed as well). Announcements will also be made on WKNE 103.7, WINQ 98.7 and WKBK 1290.

Occasionally we will have the luxury of canceling the night before a storm so that families have more time to plan for childcare.

Special Note: There is NO beforecare on the days when SVCS has a delayed opening time. Sorry for this inconvenience, but we want our staff and families driving on safe roads.

Check This Out! The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) for Grades 6-12

My name is Meredith Speranza and I am the Program Manager for The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) coming to campus at Keene State College this January.

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy is a groundbreaking and exciting year-long class that transforms middle and high school students (grades 6-12) into real, confident entrepreneurs. Throughout the class, students develop business ideas, write business plans, conduct market research, pitch their plans to a panel of investors, and actually launch and run their own real, legal, fully formed companies and social movements. Complete with dynamic guest speakers from the local business community and exciting behind-the-scenes trips to local companies, the fun, projects-based YEA! program empowers students to take charge of their futures in a profound way.

Founded in 2004 at the University of Rochester with support from the Kauffman Foundation, the Young Entrepreneurs Academy today serves thousands of students in communities across America, but, until now, not in New Hampshire. While the program will be conducted on Keene State's campus, please note that Keene State students are not participants, and classes are not taught by Keene State faculty; Keene State is offering its classroom and other physical infrastructure to help make it possible to bring the YEA! program to the Monanadnock Region to benefit these young people.

If you have a few minutes, I would encourage you to explore the main website (www.yeausa.org) to learn more about the program. I welcome the opportunity to have a few minutes of your time over the telephone to talk about how I think we can best involve your students!

Do not hesitate to contact me! Feel free to email me or call me on my direct office line (I work full time at C&S) and can be reached at 603-354-4909.
