Let us know if we inadvertently left you off
the list!

WOWIE, WHAT A WEEK!
  • You may have been alerted that SVCS was on TV Wednesday morning! Meteorologist Kevin Skarupa of WMUR Channel 9 visited the Surry campus on Tuesday, speaking to the students about our local weather, being on TV, and strange weather facts. Even the Kinders sat and listened attentively for a full hour while Kevin shared about his job. He is a delightful, down-to-earth guy, who surprised us all by pulling out a videocamera at the end of his talk, saying "Who wants to be on TV?" (The crowd went wild.) He panned the classroom while we waved madly - and the next morning, there we were! He also showed the Channel 9 co-anchors our gifts to him on the air: a Surry Village T-shirt, and an umbrella with the school's logo and all the students' signatures! Ask your child what they learned from Kevin. Even the teachers learned a lot!  Click here to see the broadcast.
  • The 7/8s are basking in the glory of their second annual Science and Technology Fair, held Thursday night at the TDS Center on the Keene State Campus. Once again parent Rich W. and his employer, Markem-Imaje, were instrumental in securing the building and display equipment, even taking responsibility for printing beautiful professional posters for students to display their research and results. From "The Effect of Weight on Robot Performance" to "The Effect of Multitasking on Memory," the students presented their posters and commentary to judges, families, and friends. The judges chose 9 projects to honor with special recognition: 5 for strong verbal presentation and 4 for overall quality. The presentation awards went to Tori, Will, Pierce, and Olivia B.; the overall awards went to Yu Yao, Macy, Colby, Jared and Genavieve. The judges noted that Genavieve's project, "Protecting Our Soil: The Effect of RipRap on Erosion" exhibited exceptional scholarship and scientific integrity. Congratulations to all the 7/8s and to Anne and Sarah for their hard work and impressive fair!
  • The SVCS staff has had a glorious Teacher Appreciation Week. From the hot breakfast treats on Monday morning to the pansies, goodie bags, "Yummy Drinks Day," and the much-anticipated staff luncheon today, we've loved all the attention and having a treat to look forward to each day! We know that many parents - especially the Parent Council folks - have put in a lot of work to make this generous week happen, and we want to extend our heartfelt thanks for your time and efforts. It really makes a difference. THANK YOU. VERY MUCH.
  • You may have noticed there's a new structure on the playground, a large wooden octagon courtesy of Keith F., father of Tori and Kyla. Apparently Nature's Classroom has a "Gaga Pit" (no relation to Lady Gaga) and the 6th-graders last year came back raving about it. Turns out this game is a phenomenon across the country, emigrating from Israel and now popular around the world. It's sometimes called "a kinder, gentler dodgeball," and is rowdy rather than cutthroat, cheerful rather than intense. All week crowds have formed around the Gaga pit; one day chanting ensued and the administration had to check that Roman gladiators had not somehow entered the arena. Teachers report that the students adore the game and are civilized and fair in their play. Many thanks to Keith!

Updates and Stuff to Know

1. On Thursday, May 29, at dismissal time the 5/6 class will be selling products they have been making as part of their Cities and Economies unit. Groups constructed mini-societies with their own laws and industries, and have strategized together about finances, including assembly lines, overhead costs, and profit margins. Bring a few bucks to purchase a handmade bracelet, cookies, and other tempting items. Let's see where the law of supply and demand gets us!

2. The SVCS Drama Club is closing in on its performance dates for "Adventures of a Comic Book Artist." There will be 3 chances to see it, all at the Surry Town Hall: a dress rehearsal and performance for the school on Friday, June 6 at 12:30 p.m.; and two "official" performances: June 6 at 6:45 p.m. and Saturday, June 7 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $7. The club has been practicing with great commitment and focus for months now, and according to leader Deb McGahie, things are really coming together. Don't miss it!

Nurse Notes

Lots of illness at SVCS the past few weeks...Here are a few tips proven to help us avoid the germ swamp:

  • Replace toothbrushes every 3 months or after a bout of illness.
  • Encourage kids NOT to share cups/drinks/snacks.
  • Wash your hands before every meal. This one really works!
  • If you have a dishwasher, put your reusable water bottles through a cycle - otherwise any germs you may be harboring can reinfect you the next day.
  • We know Mom said it, but it's really true: get enough rest and stick to healthier foods to avoid succumbing to viruses and bacteria. Your immune system needs your support!
  • Never come to school with a fever, and wait 24 hours to come back if you do have one.

Tick Season: THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR EVERYONE

The NH Division of Public Health Services (NH DPHS) recommends:

1) Recognition that NH continues to have one of the highest rates of Lyme disease in the nation and ~60% of deer ticks sampled in NH are infected with Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

2) Prevention of disease through use of DEET insect repellent, wearing long pants and sleeves outdoors, and daily tick checks followed by prompt removal of any ticks.

3) Diagnosis of early Lyme disease when erythema migrans is present based solely on clinical suspicion because diagnostic serologies (including IgM) may not yet be positive.

4) Awareness that recent reports of sudden cardiac death attributed to Lyme disease carditis highlight the importance of prompt diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease.

5) Report all tickborne diseases, confirmed or suspected, to the NH DPHS Bureau of Infectious Disease Control at 603-271-4496 (after hours 1-800-852-3345, x5300).

Click here for more information.  For any questions regarding the contents of this message, please contact NH DHHS, DPHS, Bureau of Infectious Disease Control at 603-271-4496 (after hours 1-800-852-3345 ext. 5300).

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR SPANISH TEENS IN JULY

Expand your family's horizons this summer by welcoming a student from Spain into your home through the STEP-to-U.S.A. program. The boys and girls, who range in age from 14 to 18, will arrive on June 25 and spend 3 1/2 weeks in Vermont, departing on July 20.

The students are all from the Basque Region of Spain and must have excellent grades, attendance and behavior in school, and also pass an English conversational interview, to be accepted into the program.

Host families are asked to provide a warm and safe home environment for the student, as well as meals and transportation to a meeting spot on the days there are field trips (to New York, Boston, and Six Flags, and host siblings are invited to come along!). It's fine for a student to share a room with a host sibling. The students have their own spending money and phone cards.

Since the students arrive soon, interested families are encouraged to call Ann Newsmith at 802-257-4710 or email [email protected].
